2 1/2 PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER 8" BY 10", SIGNEDby Goddard London, dated November 9, 1849. Lemuel Goddard was an American sperm oil merchant in England and a partner to New Bedford shipowners Swift and Allen who owned the Bark Paulina. The letter discusses the excellence of the Greener guns, the price of whale oil and bone. The letter also addresses the use of harpoon guns on an 1849 New Bedford whaling voyage with captain, John Thatch to the Indian Ocean. The letter contains a blue hand stamp. It also contains a 1790 booklet 11 pages related to Charles Moore’s English harpoon gun.

COLLECTION OF (6) EARLY 20TH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHSrelated to the Wanderer. One is signed Albert Cook Church, New Bedford, Massachusetts. He worked from 1880 to 1962. One depicts the Wanderer on the rocks of Cuttyhunk. There are three other large photos of the Wanderer 10" by 8", unsigned. There are two smaller photos of the Wanderer from the John Tweedy collection, measuring 3 1/2" by 5".

THREE-MONTH JOURNAL, HANDWRITTEN FROM THE NEWBedford Whaleship America with Captain Charles Seabury in command. She sailed from New Bedford on April 1, 1849 and arrived in San Francisco on September 22 carrying passengers and supplies for the gold rush craze. The discovery of gold in San Francisco captivated many of the sailors involved in New Bedford Whaling and enticed them to travel to San Francisco to find gold. The journal mentions passing the Falkland Islands as well as going around Cape Horn where numerous whales were cited. Included in this is a newspaper article outlining the adventures of Captain JM Tilton who traveled to California to seek his fortune in the gold rush. 15" by 10". Nine two sided handwritten pages some shows staining and discoloration, very legible handwriting. A handwritten poem is also attached. There are some modern ink notations on the tops of the pages.
