- JOSEPH WOODFORD RAKU LIDDED JAR, TWIGS
JOSEPH WOODFORD RAKU LIDDED JAR, TWIGS & AGATEJoseph Woodford (American, XX-XXI). Raku ceramic lidded vessel with twigs and agate, 2011. Signed and dated underfoot. A beautiful wheel-thrown, Raku-fired ceramic lidded vessel by Joseph Woodford. Raku firing is Woodford's specialty, and this piece captures the mystique of this technique with its myriad of colors - a glistening teal green with iridescence of violet, fuchsia, aqua, copper, and cobalt hues further embellishing the surface of the beautiful lentoid body. Woodford encircled the rim with multiple riveted bands of clay boasting hues of champagne iridescence, bridging the form to the scored hemispheric base of the lid which presents with a similar champagne iridescence. This leads the eye to the lid's spectacular totemic arrangement, featuring natural tree twigs emerging from a jet black spool-shaped knob crowned by a stunning piece of agate set within a v-shaped mount of warm golden hues. Size: 10.5" diameter x 10.625" H (26.7 cm x 27 cm)
About the artist: Joseph Woodford has been creating his masterful Raku fired ceramics since 1993. Honors include four "Best in Show" designations, and in 2002, HGTV featured him in "Modern Masters." In his words, "The ability to express my creativity in such a process-driven art form has made ceramics a lifelong passion for me. Each stage of this process has its own equally important part in creating a successful piece of art. Using the wheel as a primary tool, my work tends to show subtle suggestions of various cultural backgrounds in monumental size." (Summit Daily, August 30, 2013)
Provenance: private Goldstein collection, Denver, Colorado, USA. The Goldstein's have amassed their collection over the past six decades.

Condition:
Signed and dated underfoot. Overall, lidded vessel is intact and excellent. A few minor interruptions to glaze on vessel body commensurate with the Raku firing process. Indentation near the base is likely from a tool used to hold the piece during the Raku firing process. Agate is intact and excellent.
