THE ROSS-MARIS-MCCREDY-RUCKMAN FAMILY PHILADELPHIA CHIPPENDALE CHINA TABLE, CIRCA 1765-1775.
The four rectangular cabriole legs with flower and acanthus carved knees and ball and claw feet; gadroon and leaf border along base of frame and ripple molding along edge of top. Mahogany and white cedar as secondary wood. Height 28 ⅛ inches, width 20 ⅜ inches, length 34 ¾ inches. This china table, alternately called a silver table and sometimes a tea table, is of the utmost rarity. Portsmouth and New York counterparts dating to the eighteenth century exist in some numbers. Examples made in Williamsburg, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina also have been identified. Few, however, have been associated with Philadelphia, which is surprising given the city's population size and sophistication as a commercial, craft and social center at the time. William MacPherson Hornor mentioned, but did not picture, an example in his seminal Blue Book Philadelphia Furniture, page 138. That such tables were made in Philadelphia there is no doubt, as evidenced by a surviving manuscript copy of a cabinetmaker's price book dated 1772. It lists round tea tables, square tea tables and "China Tables." Of the last it identifies four variants, all with Marlborough legs. In order of increasing cost for either mahogany or walnut they are with "stretcher with bases, brackets and fret top," with "open stretcher top...bases and brackets," with "fret frame" and finally with a "commode frame." Even though all were Marlborough legged, a client could order one with cabriole legs, "claw feet," "leaves on the knees" and " carved rails," as noted for square tea tables in the same document. Further insight into this important table was compiled by noted authority, Alan Miller of Quakertown, Pennsylvania. Following a careful, considered examination, he concluded that "I am absolutely convinced that this table is of Philadelphia eighteenth century manufacture..." He did so after thoroughly analyzing its materials, construction and history of use against the background of both Philadelphia eighteenth century furniture, and similar tables made in the Anglo-American community. Among the more significant features employed in the construction of this table is the manner in which the frame was constructed. "The rails are not veneered; the cabinetmaker...tenoned the rails into the tops of the legs over the knees as was typically done and he contrived for the faces of the rails to pass outside the top squares of the legs and miter on the corners. His goal was to have the highly figured mahogany rails read as an uninterrupted frieze. The exceptional joinery necessary to achieve this was unconventional and complicated...British...cabinetmakers who wished to achieve this same design goal...invariably used secondary wood rails joined to the legs conventionally and then faced or veneered the rails with show wood. Miller further observed that "this table is provably of Philadelphia origin also by its materials and workmanship...This table was carved by an important and prolific Philadelphia carver whose name is not now known. Luke Beckerdite, my carving research partner, and I have referred to him for years as 'the spikey leaf carver' because of his habit of running his detailing gouge which produced the vein in the leaf right off the end of the leaf." The carved leaves extending over the knees of this table exhibit this singular feature. Miller also felt the ripple molding around the edge of the top deserved comment, since it is so out of character for eighteenth-century formal Philadelphia furniture. In fact this molding is a mid-nineteenth century replacement for the original "fret top" or pierced gallery, a dramatic visual component of such tables but inherently fragile and prone to damage. Although the original owner of this table is not known for certain, it may have been Thomas Ross (b. 1739) and his wife Rachel Longstreth Ross (1757-1782) of Philadelphia. From them it passed to their daughter, Rachel Ross (1782-1875), who married Richard Maris (1772-1817). The table then passed to their son George G. Maris (1810-1887) and his wife, Sarah Ruckman Maris (1809-1892) of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The table is pictured (with ripple molding in place) in a circa 1880s photograph of the Maris's parlor to the left of the fireplace. When Sarah Ruckman Maris died, the inventory of her household goods listed this table as "side wall center table, fancy." She willed the table to her niece Frances Ruckman (1868-1964), who married R. Wilson McCredy (1854-1924) of Philadelphia. She in turn willed the table to her nephew, John Fell Ruckman (1901-1965) of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, who left it to Charles V. Swain (1914-2006). Given its artistry, history and unusual form, this superlative table is notable. When Alexandra Rollins published "Furniture in the Collection of the Dietrich American Foundation" in the May 1984 issue of Antiques, she pictured a related rectangular Philadelphia cabriole leg tea table as plate XIX on page 1116. She noted that "This form is common in New York but rare in Philadelphia. [The late] Harold Sack believes this to be the only Philadelphia tea table to combine a rectangular molded top, a gadrooned skirt, and cabriole legs ending in claw-and-ball feet." That observation is even more true of this remarkable variant, as concluded by Alan Miller in closing his report. He stated that "A true Rococo Philadelphia china table is of the highest interest..."
