ALIX-LOUISE ÉNAULT (FRENCH 1850-1909) A PAINTING, "FIRS...ALIX-LOUISE ÉNAULT (French 1850-1909) A PAINTING, "First Mourning," CIRCA 1891, oil on canvas, signed U/L, "Alix Énault;" 23 3/4" x 14 3/4", framed 30 1/2" x 21 1/4". Note: Featured cover art for French magazine La Famille published July 26, 1891, no. 616.A pupil of Jean-Baptiste-Ange Tissier (French 1814-1876)When considering works by the artist, Madame Alix-Louis Enault, her most well received painting Fleurs de Serre is listed in Women Painters of the World: From the Time of Caterina Virgi (1413-1463) to Rosa Bonheur and the Present Day, edited by Walter Shaw Sparrow, published June 1904, plate 225. The turn of the century book lists Madam Alix-Louise Enault in the same breath with other "great female artists", including Artemisia Gentileschi, Mary Cassatt, Angelica Kauffman, R.A., Madame Vigée Le Brun, and Berthe Morisot among many other lady artists. Fleurs de Serre is widely accepted in the 21st century to be a self portrait of the artist. When compared to the present painting, First Mourning, the similarity of the sitters is remarkable. The solemn, woeful, silent questioning contributes to the psychological examination of mourning and reflect the realities of Victorian era feminine existence.

A moving autograph letter signed by French novelist and politician Victor Hugo (1802-1885), dated September 16, 1843, to Madame de Courbonne on the death of his daughter. Leopoldine Hugo Vacquerie (1824-1843) and her husband drowned when their boat overturned in the River Seine on September 4th. According to an old catalog entry affixed to the accompanying collector's folder, the letter translates in part as "Your soul, Madame, is a treasure of charity. You have the fine and high intelligence that can touch our wounds without causing pain. A tear of yours comes so profoundly from the heart. Alas, Madam, I am overwhelmed. I have lost a child who was an angel. I thank you. You lean over me, you weep with me. May you be blessed and happy in all the ways you love..."
Madame de Courbonne (1786-1863), born Antoinette-Camille Le Pescheux, was one of the most prominent society figures of Restoration France. After becoming Madame de Courbonne in 1830, she maintained a famous Paris salon where she entertained many prominent figures, including not only Victor Hugo but Madame Recamier, Talleyrand and Lafayette. A contemporary described her hospitality: "This salon is the last refuge of talkers, men and women of spirit or those who claim to have one or who pass for one."

RARE GROUP OF A SCHOLAR'S PORTRAIT AND HIS ANCESTOR PORTRAITS
QING DYNASTY, DAOGUANG PERIOD, 1831AD ??? ??????????????? ???? ???????ink and colour on paper, framed, comprising the commissioner- Zhou Zaotang's portrait, shown seated on a horseshoe-back folding armchair, jiaoyi, his right leg folded, left hand holding a book, his face determined as he was newly appointed as an official on the new year of Xin Mao during the Daoguang period, corresponding to 1831AD, titled 'Chu Deng Shi Ban' (First Step of an Official Career), in the summer of Gui Si year (two years later), corresponding to 1833AD, further inscribed an enumeration of his aspirations on the left of his portrait; together with twelve of his ancestor portraits in eight works(9)largest: 34.3cm x 24.6cmProvenance:William Steel (D.1895), Master Baker to the colonial forces in the Indian Mutiny and the Opium wars, acquired these paintings in China (by repute);Inherited by his daughter, Mrs Anne Lang Roger (nee Steel) and her husband Herbert Campbell Roger, O.B.E. (D.1920);Inherited by their son Henry Glenlyon Campbell Roger (1919-1999);Thence by family descent.Note:From the private Scottish collection of Henry Glenlyon Campbell Roger (1919-1999), of Duddingston Village, Edinburgh. Inherited from the estate of his father, Herbert Campbell Roger, OBE (1st Jan 1920), awarded the Chevalier de L’Ordre de la Couronne by King Albert of Belgium for his service during the Great War (4th Dec 1919) and as Secretary of the British Red Cross for some 20 years. Lived in Glasgow and latterly at Greenend, Guilford, Surrey. Thence by family descent.Although anecdotal, the family used to discuss the adventures of William (James) Steel, father of Mrs Anne Lang Roger, a Master Baker of 498 St Vincent Street, Glasgow. He died, aged 47 on 28/5/1895 (BMD Barony) after a number of years as a contracted Master Baker to the colonial forces in the Indian Mutiny and the Opium wars. He was believed to have brought a considerable number of Far Eastern items back with him. William Steel was wealthy and variously described as Head of the house, house factor, Master Baker and a mill owner (1881 Census, Glasgow). These items would have fallen to Mrs Anne Lang Roger (nee Steel) his daughter by inheritance. The private family collection was considerable and was enhanced by further purchases made by Mrs Anne Lang Roger's husband Herbert Campbell Roger in accordance with the fashion trends towards the end of the Victorian period.Note: The centre of this group of portraits is Zhou Zaotang, who commissioned this rare group of his ancestor portraits. This is to trace back, or celebrate the significance of his family in the political domain in the Qing Court. Spanning over three generations, Zhou's commission of his ancestor portraits are detailed with their respective names. However, in a patriarchal society, only the males have their full names and females their maiden names. The details also include their official ranks, political careers, dates and times of birth and death, and their burial sites. The lineage starts from his great-grandfather Zhou Zhang (1691-1752) and his great-grandmother Madam Yang (1668-1750). Followed by grandfather Zhou Weibing (1723-1749), and grandmother Madam Yu (1725-1754). All depicted in double portraits. Curiously, almost as an improbable repetition, Zhou Zaotang's ancestors also included a family with the surname 'Li'. Starting from his great grandfather Li Chaogui (1683-1764), and great grandmother Madam Yang (1691-1765). Followed by grandfather Li Chunxiang (1723-1803), and grandmother Madam Zhang (1727-1803). All in single portraits and the male members with more elaborate inscriptions. The comprehensive original collection (excluded in this lot) discloses that the grandfather Zhou Weibing, had a son Zhou Xu (1746-1791); Whereas grandfather Li Chunxiang also had a high-ranked son Li Feng (1753-1811). Both of whom the commissioner Zhou Zaotang would call father. It is revealed in The Zhou and Li's Family Genealogy (compiled and edited by Zhou Zaotang in the Guangxu period), that during the fifty-sixth Qianlong year, 1791AD, the same year of Zaotang's biological father Zhou Xu's death, Zhou Zaotang would be adopted as a son by Li Feng. Hence, there are two lineages of Zhou and Li in Zaotang's ancestorship. This collection offered here does not include Zhou Zaotang's wife. Therefore, it is unclear who she was. However, through the ancestor portraits of Zhou's father and mother in laws: Dai Binggang (1754-1818), his wife Madam Yang (1753-?), and his concubine Madam Zhang (?-1818), we can establish that she was Madam Dai.We also learn from the ancestor portraits that the Lis were of more significant social ranking than the Zhous. Pierre Mignard (French, 1612-1695), "Marie-Madeleine Pioche de la Vergne, Comtesse de La Fayette (1634-1693)", oil on canvas, unsigned, partial handwritten labels with artist, date and sitter en verso, 32 in. x 25 in., framed with artist and title plaque. Note: The Countess of La Fayette, known to many as ?Madame de Lafayette,? was born Marie-Madeleine Pioche de la Vergne in 1634 in Paris. Her family were wealthy and prominent minor nobles, and she married François Motier, Count of La Fayette, in 1655. As a young woman, she received an excellent education at court as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Regent Anne of Austria, whose son would become Louis XIV upon reaching his majority. Due to her education and the fact that her parents often entertained writers, philosophers, and scholars during her childhood, it is not surprising that Madame de La Fayette developed an interest in writing. Publishing anonymously or under a pen name, Madame de La Fayette wrote seven novels, including her most famous work The Princess of Cleves. As a successful and prolific portrait painter, Pierre Mignard would have had many opportunities to paint nobility such as the Countess of La Fayette. Mignard came from a family of artisans, and both he and his brother, Nicolas, became painters. Studying with prominent artists of the time such as Simon Vouet, Jean Bouchet and Nicolas Poussin, Mignard became known in Rome for his religious paintings. Leaving Rome for Paris, he became even more well known for his portraits; among his most famous sitters are the playwright Molière and the mathematician René Descartes. Known for his rich palette with jewel-like tones and fine brushwork, this portrait of Madame de La Fayette is a beautiful example of Mignard?s skill.

Catherine de Medici Queen of France ALS 1552 1p 8.5 x 12.25 in. plus 1 x 3.25 in. piece attached; Chalons 29 May 1552. Entire sheet attached to a heavy piece of paper with strip attached to long edge on verso. Boldly signed Caterine and countersigned Duthier. Document with transcription translation and notes. Catherine writes to Madame de Humieres the royal governess that she is writing to la Romanerye (the court physician) and Madame du Perron. Her son d'Orleans (Charles) is doing well with the nurse assigned to him and there would seem to be no need to move him to the other nurse who apparently had ringworm or some other skin affliction. Catherine also notes that he still has two months to suckle. Charles was born 27 June 1550 so apparently the noble children were nursed for at least 2 years. There are many letters between Catherine and Madame de Humieres published in French histories that indicate Catherine's concern with the welfare of her children.Born to wealthy parents Caterina de' Medici (1519-1589) was orphaned within the first month of life. Although her father was of common origins her mother was from an ancient French noble family so a number of European royal families were interested in arranging a marriage with her and the decision was up to Pope Clement VII Giulio de' Medici. Although James V of Scotland thought he was successful in arranging for her hand Clement jumped at an offer from Francis I of France for his second son Henry. Henry took little interest in Catherine openly associating with mistresses and even publicly acknowledging their offspring. Five years into the marriage at the age of 19 Henry took 38-year-old Diane de Poitiers as his mistress. She would remain with him for the remainder of his life. With the accidental death of Francis I Henry became King of France as Henry II with Catherine as his consort the couple still childless. Henry's older brother Francis died a few years earlier at the age of 18 leaving the second son as heir to the throne. But it increased pressure for Catherine to bear an heir for Henry who would spend months away from his consort preferring his mistresses. After some desperate moves Catherine did eventually become pregnant and went on to have 10 children of whom seven survived infancy.Henry did not allow Catherine to be involved in government or even live near the seat of power (Diane was resident there). When Henry died in 1559 her oldest son Francis was only 15. He only reigned for 18 months succeeded by Charles IX then only 10. Catherine needed to learn how to handle the governing of the state for her young sons. Charles was succeeded by Henry III.Catherine made mistakes particularly regarding the Huguenots and other religious conflicts. However the years in which her sons reigned have been called the "Age of Catherine de Medici" for the incredible influence she wielded. Condition: Some water damage to document; with some ink run.
