Brian Sanders (B. 1937) "Battle of Leyte Gulf": Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Battle of Leyte Gulf" Oil painting on Masonite. Artist notes in margins. . . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 52c Battle of Leyte Gulf 1944 stamp issued October 24, 1994. . . "Strike! Repeat! Strike! Good Luck!" On October 24, 1944, Admiral William Halsey's powerful command was broadcast over loudspeakers in nearly one hundred Allied warships. Encouraged by the blow that had been dealt to Japan during the successful invasion at Peleliu, Halsey declared that area of the Pacific "wide open" and moved the scheduled invasion of Leyte up two months. What transpired at Leyte Gulf could actually be described as a miniature, four-day war. Fought in three dimensions -- land, sea, and air -- the battle saw the introduction of kamikaze suicide planes and the sinking of four Japanese aircraft carriers. Most of Japan's battleships also were destroyed, including Admiral Nishimura's Yamashiro, the ship on which he lost his life. . . Image Size: 13. 5 x 16. 5 in. . Overall Size: 17. 5 x 20. 5 in. . Roman Lead Sarcophagus Panel w/ Gorgoneion and Dolphins: Roman, Holy Land / Phoenicia, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A remarkable lead sarcophagus panel executed in relief with crossing diagonal lines of a floral motif and a top border comprised of several laurel leaves with berries arranged in a straight line, flanked above and below by a braided rope design. The striations of floral decor divide up the body of the piece by forming pediment-esque sections filled with a Gorgoneion (head of a Gorgon) on the left and a Roman amphora between two dolphins on the right. This example is replete with symbolism. The leaves refer to actual garlands and flowers used to decorate tombs and altars. The gorgoneion has apotropaic functions as guardians of tombs and were used frequently in ancient homes to avert evil from entering. Size: 13. 5" W x 10. 75" H (34. 3 cm x 27. 3 cm). . The dolphins, meanwhile, remind us of a powerful and popular motif in Roman artwork. The Romans were largely a maritime empire, and the iconography of the sea included dolphins. Romans believed these animals carried souls to the Fortunate Isles, perhaps because they could pass through the air-breathing terrestrial world and into the watery depths that claimed so many Roman sailors' lives. This symbol must have had personal significance for the deceased, who often ordered coffins to be made long before they died. Dolphins can also be a reference to the cult of Bacchus (equivalent to the Greek god Dionysus). . Prior to the 2nd century, Romans cremated their dead; around that time, they became inspired by the Greek and Etruscan practice of using sarcophagi, and they began to make coffins. This trend spread rapidly throughout the Roman Empire and between social stratums. While those of nobility would commission marble sarcophagi, the middle class would commission lead sarcophagi, such as this one. Lead sarcophagi were only made in Phoenicia, or the Eastern part of the empire, but were shipped west due to popularity. . . Brian Sanders (B. 1937) "Battle - Philippine Sea": Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "First Battle of the Philippine Sea" Oil on Canvas. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c First Battle of the Philippine Sea 1944 stamp issued June 19, 1994. . . By June 1944, Admiral Raymond Spruance, commander of the U. S. 5th Fleet, had assembled the largest naval force ever seen in the Pacific Ocean. Under the command of Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher, this powerful armada was known as Task Force 58. Its job was to support amphibious assaults on Saipan, Tinian and Guam. By June 15, Japanese Combined Fleet Commander Admiral Soemu Toyoda knew a decisive battle would take place near Saipan, where 20, 000 U. S. troops had landed. What he did not know was that the Americans had broken Japanese naval codes. Thus, on June 19, when the Japanese launched four air strikes, the U. S. was ready. Out of 373 attacking Japanese aircraft, only 130 returned. For U. S. Hellcat pilots it was "as easy as shooting turkeys. " . . Image Size: 13. 5 x 16. 25 in. . Overall Size: 16. 25 x 19. 75 in. . TIGER IRON – POLISHED SLAB Ord Ranges, Western Australia Like the material from Minnesota; it is now thought that this banded, iron-rich material represents a 'trace fossil'. During the Archean period (3.8 - 2.5 billion years ago) the first forms of life on this planet were simple, single celled organisms that managed to prosper because they had an open niche with no competition. These simple organisms were (and are) the Prokaryotes or Cyanobacteria; life forms so simple they had no cellular nucleus at all. Until evolution provided them with slightly more advanced competitors; (the Eukaryotes), they happily turned seawater, sunlight and atmospheric carbon dioxide into the first atmospheric oxygen this planet has known. In addition; they produced the first 'reefs'; structures called stromatolites. Silt and sand eroded from the land bordered by these shallow seas was trapped in layers of 'slime' made up of cyanobacteria. As layers of mud and sand covered the slime colonies; new layers of slime would grow on top of old, sediment laden ones. This constant accretion over millions of years resulted in some areas acquiring thousands of feet of this material which was subsequently buried and compressed by overlying material into the banded stone seen here. The erratic nature of the varying sedimentation rates is readily apparent in the red, gold and brown banding of this highly polished slab. It has been cut across the layers to highlight this record of a time so far in the distant past that it is almost incomprehensible. A time so far in the past that there was: no air as we know it, and no other life. This polished slab truly represents; a "slice of life" and weighs 19 pounds and measures 11 ½ x 9 ½ x 2 1/8 inches.

An emotive Pacific War New Zealand Memorial Cross to Lieutenant John Christie Leslie, aide-de-camp to Maj-Gen O. H. Mead, CBE, DSO, GOC Pacific Section, 2 NZEF, the silver cross named on the reverse [6866 LT. J. C. LESLIE], in case of issue. As issued.
At six o'clock on the morning of 18th July operational command in Fiji passed to the Americans, commanded by Major General Robert S. Beightler. Mead remained in Suva to observe amphibious landing operations by United States navy, army, and air units on the beaches of Koro Island, which he had helped to select for this first and only rehearsal of the landing on Guadalcanal. He and Leslie then left on the morning of 25 July to pay a farewell visit to Tonga, but their Hudson aircraft was lost in a tropical storm. An inquiry revealed that the aircraft, low in fuel after flying in torrential rain which made any observation impossible, had been accidentally directed south of the island by an American officer operating radio location, who mistook other aircraft from a carrier in the neighbourhood for the New Zealand Hudson. No trace of the aircraft or its occupants was ever found, though sea and air searches were maintained for some days afterwards.
Leslie is named on Panel 1 of the Memorial in the Bourail New Zealand War Cemetery, New Caledonia. He was married to Clarice Dinah Leslie, of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.

Rolex "Red" Submariner Reference 1680 Stainless Steel Wristwatch with Box, and Papers: Rolex "Red" Submariner Reference 1680 Stainless Steel Wristwatch with Box, and Papers, original stainless steel screw-back Oyster case with bidirectional bezel aged to a nice blue/gray, original matte black feet first MKVI dial with light creamy markers, with a replaced stainless steel folded link bracelet with deployant clasp and fold-over safety link, cal. 1570 automatic movement, serial no. 3740277, with original box, punch paper dated "New York May 1975, " cards, and hang tag, 40 mm. . . Note: Harold Leavitt and his wife Erma vacationed in St. John, staying at Caneel Bay for many years. He got certified to dive there and dove extensively around the American Virgin Islands and British Virgin Gorda. He loved diving; the first thing he'd do upon arriving at Caneel Bay was to set up a schedule of dives. He encountered every predator fish the area had to offer including moray eels, barracuda, sting rays, and maybe a shark or two. His Rolex accompanied him wherever he went, whether on land or in the water. Picturing him in my mind, he's smiling with his arms folded just below his waist wearing his Rolex. . . Sitting on a ledge off Tortuga sits the wreck of The Roan. Its bow is sixty feet down, but the stern is only thirty feet. It was the first and only time that I, his son, ever dove with him. Despite twenty years of diving experience my father broke a fundamental rule by skip breathing (holding his breath between inhales) in order to stay under the water longer. But at 60 feet your air is compressed, you use up your oxygen at twice the rate as at 30 feet. Half way up his assent, he ran out of air! Naturally, the first thing most people do when the get to the surface is to take a huge gulp of air. In the water everything is weightless and calm. But at the surface there are waves. He swallowed a lot of water and had to be pulled into the boat. I was still in the water and had no idea what was going on. Once in the boat, there was my dad looking as green as a pine tree lying on the floor of the boat. Typical of my dad, he went out with just his diving guide at six the next morning to get right back into the water. Man against the sea, usually the sea wins. He just couldn't leave it that way. --Robert Leavitt . Estimate $12, 000-18, 000 . . . Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Guy Rose (1867 ''Monterey, Calif.'', a Monterey coastal landscape, circa 1918-1920, signed lower right: Guy Rose, titled on a gum label affixed to the stretcher, oil on canvas, 12'' H x 18'' W, est: $70,000/90,000
Note: When Guy Rose returned to his native Southern California in 1914 after eight years in Giverny, Northern France, he brought with him an intensified focus on light and atmosphere. Particularly in his Pacific seascapes, ''Rose could indulge two of his major pictorial interests explored at Giverny; reflections on water and multifarious atmosphere. It also satisfied his personal penchant for creating images of solitude and quiet'' (W. South, ''Guy Rose: American Impressionist''', Oakland, CA, 1995, p. 62).
Rose first visited Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1918, and the Carmel and Monterey areas immediately became ''the primary focus of what were to be his last years of painting'' (W. South, p. 67). Rose spent the summers of 1918, 1919 and 1920 in Carmel and there produced a prodigious number of Carmel and Monterey coastals, exploring similar locations and views but always approaching each painting as a unique experience. ''It was clearly not Rose's intent to paint the same scene over and over, but rather to paint the varied experiences of expansiveness versus enclosure, of translucence versus opacity, or warmth versus cold'' (W. South, p. 67).
''Monterey, Calif.'' is a remarkable study of light and water-saturated air at the intersection where ocean meets land. Rose utilizes a restrained range from sunlight to shadow and plays with subtle changes in light and dark pigments to enliven the composition. ''Rose?s keen attentiveness to actual atmospheric conditions, derived most fully from Monet, intensifies the experience of openness and recession'' (W. South, p. 64). Recession is a prominent feature here as the exposed coastal rocks recede further and further into deepening water toward the open ocean. Interestingly, in the present work Rose omits the horizon line and sky, effectively reining in the sensation of an infinite sea often evoked by his coastals and directing attention instead toward rich coastal details.
The immediacy of the foreground rocks along the lower compositional edge, painted in rose and blue-grey tones, give the impression that the viewer is in the scene, standing above the small cove. A glimpse of beach in the lower right nearly blends with the neighboring rocks, whose smooth planes become rough and craggy where the rock extends out and above the water. Spectral algae blooms on the underside reflect the water?s surface colors. The outcropping casts the deepest shadow in the composition, creating turquoise jewel-tone facets on the inside of a gentle wave moving toward the beach. The rich shadows are further emphasized by near-black paint used to present the rock below the shifting surface. Tight, lively brushstrokes of white water that churn over the edges of the retreating rocks in the middle ground are in contrast with elongated, flat, horizontal brushwork that finishes the furthest viewable ocean. Rose?s obsessive focus on color behavior in coastal atmospheric variation is on exquisite display in ''Monterey, Calif.''

VIETNAM: "I DO NOT THINK MR. JOHNSON HAS MANAGED THE WAR . . . WELL" FORD, GERALD R. Typed Letter Signed, "Jerry Ford," as House Minority Leader, to Thomas E. Gaertner, thanking him for sending a report on Latin America, explaining how he believes the war in Vietnam should be managed, and expressing his concern about Communist activity in the U.S. and the U.S. commitment to certain treaties. 1 page, 4to, "Office of the Minority Leader" stationery; horizontal folds. With the original envelope. (TFC) Washington, 13 March 1967". . . I, too, defend the principal of our policy in Vietnam; i.e., to halt Communist aggression. However, as you know, I do not think Mr. Johnson has managed the war there as well as he should. It seems to me we must cut off the flow of supplies into Vietnam and use our sea and air power to the very best advantage. I am opposed to getting bogged down in a massive land war such as we seem to be doing. . . . I share many of the misgivings indicated by the minority on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations."

WALTER LACY JARDINE (1884-1970) TRAVEL / AIR • LAND • SEA / BOOK THROUGH BURNS, PHILP & CO LTD. Circa 1930. 39 1/4x24 1/2 inches, 99 3/4x62 1/4 cm. H & G Pty Ltd. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some affecting text; restored losses, creases and minor overpainting at edges. Burns, Philp & Co. was a trading company founded in 1883, which used their own ships to keep their stores supplied. As they purchased plantations to keep their stores stocked, they needed more ships, which they began to use to deliver mail and ultimately carry passengers. The company grew until it was so large that it became a household name in Australia and a pillar on the country's stock exchange. Through 1925, the company published a semi-regular annual called Picturesque Travel, which later became BP Magazine, used to promote their tourist destinations and offerings. In June, 1929, BP Magazine ran an editorial entitled "The Travel Age," which stated, "Australia is the starting point for innumerable tours among the islands of the Pacific and trips through Eastern lands. From her harbors sail the comfortable ships that make traveling an actual pleasure." That editorial was accompanied by a photomontage made by the explorer Frank Hurley, entitled "By Sea, Land and Air," which illustrates a biplane, a steam train and a cruise liner superimposed into a single image (see Prosthetic Gods: Travel, Representation and Colonial Governance, by Robert Dixon, University of Queensland Press, 2001, p. 91). It seems more than likely that this image was the inspiration for this poster. Jardine was a talented illustrator from an early age; at just 17 years old, he began drawing for the Australian Star newspaper. He moved to New York City in the early 1920s and provided illustrations for Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping and other magazines. He returned to Australia in 1928 and opened up his own studio, from where he did advertising campaigns for many Australian companies. "Unusually for the period, his artistic reputation rested solely upon his commercial designs" (Monash p. 27).- 6,000
Don Balke (B. 1933) "American Golden Plover" W/C: Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "American Golden Plover and Fireweed" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for the Birds and Flowers of Canada - the Yukon Territory, cancelled June 13, 1978. . . GOLDEN PLOVER Pluuialis dominica Still clad in gold-spangled breeding plumage, the Golden Plover heads south in September on a phenomenal ocean flight from Nova Scotia to South America. Later, the young follow over land and sea to join the older birds in the pampas. Upon their return in the spring, they choose for their nest site a ridgetop on the open, Canadian tundra. Scratching a hollow in reindeer moss and lining it with other lichens, the birds make little attempt to conceal their nest from predators. At the turn of the century, the Golden Plover was nearly destroyed by hunters, but protection has now helped restore the species. FIREWEED Epilobium angustifolium The Fireweed's bright, rosy purple flowers keep Canadian hillsides aflame from early spring until fall. Appropriately named, the Fireweed is often the first plant to spring up following a fire. The Fireweed ranges in height from one to eight feet, and thrives in Canadian roadside marshes and in burned-over scarred areas. The plant's light, fluffy seeds spill into the air like smoky clouds. Lance-shaped, olive-colored leaves provide the Fireweed an additional name, Willow Herbs. Originally from Eurasia, the Fireweed is now thoroughly established from the Yukon Territory south to Arizona. . . Image Size: 13. 5 x 14. 5 in. . Overall Size: 14 x 17 in. . Unframed. . ROMAN LEAD SARCOPHAGUS PANEL, EX-ARTE PRIMITIVORoman, Holy Land / Phoenicia, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A remarkable lead sarcophagus panel executed in relief divided into 2 quadrilateral frames with braided borders, each filled with traditional Roman imagery. A gorgoneion or head of a gorgon - a mythological woman with hair of snakes - is featured at the center of each section, both heads surrounded by rondels, as well as 4 leaves that point inwards. The left side of the piece is additionally adorned by a dolphin, whose sinuous body curves along the right border, as though about to dive. This example is replete with symbolism. The leaves refer to actual garlands and flowers used to decorate tombs and altars. The gorgoneion has apotropaic functions as guardians of tombs and were used frequently in ancient homes to avert evil from entering. Size (of panel): 13.3" L x 4.9" H (33.8 cm x 12.4 cm); Size (of board): 15.8" L x 8" H (40.1 cm x 20.3 cm)

UNIQUE AND HISTORIC ARCHIVE OF NUCLEAR SUBMARINE USS NAUTILUS JOURNEY BENEATH THE NORTH POLE, AUGUST 3, 1958. Few maritime exploits in history had so startled the world as the silent and secret transpolar voyage of the US Navy's nuclear submarine Nautilus. This event was the beginning of nuclear arms race that wrote American history for the next few decades. On July 23, 1958, NAUTILUS departed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii under top secret orders to conduct "Operation Sunshine", the first crossing of the North Pole by a ship. At 11:15pm on August 3, 1958, Nautilus' Commanding Officer, Commander William R. Anderson, announced to his crew, "For the world, our country, and the Navy - the North Pole." With 116 men aboard, Nautilus had accomplished the "impossible", reaching the geographic North Pole - 90 degrees North. Chester William Nimitz (February 24, 1885-February 20, 1966) was a Fleet Admiral of the United States Navy. He played a major role in the naval history of World War II as Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet for U.S. naval forces and commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas for the U.S. and Allied air, land, and sea forces during World War II. Nimitz was the leading U.S. Navy authority on submarines. Qualified in submarines during his early years, he later oversaw the conversion of these vessels' propulsion from gasoline to diesel, and then later was key in acquiring approval to build the worlds' first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus. No wonder he was given these rare objects by Commander Anderson. This archive includes a small US flag inscribed on hoist "THIS WAS PRESENTED TO ME BY THE SKIPPER OF THE USS NAUTILUS SSN 571 AFTER HER NORTH POLE RUN 3 AUG 1958" signed by C.W. Nimitz. Attached to the hoist forward of presentation was one of Nimitz' sterling silver Fleet Admiral insignias. This regulation boat flag measures 16-1/2" on hoist and 32-3/4" on fly. Flag on opposite of hoist is stenciled "US NO 12 M1 44". Also in the archive are two embroidered insignia, one being a 5" x 5" square unit patch for the Nautilus, identical to the one worn by Commander Anderson as pictured on cover of September 1, 1958 LIFE Magazine, and a 6" round commemorative patch memorializing the journey beneath the North Pole. Also included in archive is an 8" x 11" image of the Nautilus showing a small American flag aft of conning tower and a contemporary matchbook cover depicting the Nautilus insignia. A little more research should be able to ascertain who Nimitz gave this grouping to as all we know from the inscription is "Ken". Ken must be an important person in Nimitz' career to have been given these valuable and historic souvenirs. PROVENANCE: Chester W. Nimitz (February 24, 1885-Feburary 20, 1966); Ex-collection Dr. John Reckless, Durham, NC. CONDITION: Very good overall. 50314-1

DON BALKE (B. 1933) "PHEASANT SITTING IN FIELD"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Pheasant Sitting in Field" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Pheasant Booklet issued April 29, 1988. From the ancient land of Colchis, at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains on the Black Sea came the colorful pheasant. Proving to be an epicure's delight, the bird was eventually brought to ancient Greece and raised for food. From there, it was transported to Rome, and then to western Europe. As America's thirteen colonies became a nation, the pheasant was introduced in the western hemisphere as well. Perhaps the most successful of these introductions was engineered in the 1880's by Judge Owen Denny. Denny was serving as United States Consul General in Shanghai at the time. He sent several dozen Chinese pheasants to Oregon where they were released in the Willamette Valley. As a result of this and other plantings, the pheasant has dispersed into almost every state of the Union. Today, American grain fields -- particularly in North and South Dakota and Nebraska -- are alive with the Ring-Necked Pheasant. Literally, millions of these beautiful birds scurry through the low cover, feasting on the grains, seeds, and berries of the northern plains. When roused, they cackle noisily, taking to flight on whining wings. It is a beautiful sight, the handsome male raising his iridescent head toward the sky, his long tail sporting plumes of color, bright against the firmament. The stamp on this First Day Cover depicts a Ring-Necked Pheasant taking to the air. It was issued as part of the rate change in 1988.
