19th C. Inuit Wood & Walrus Ivory Snuff Box: Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fabulous walrus tusk ivory snuff box with a wooden lid. The hinged lid is decorated with rivets in a diamond shape, these rivets also secure a second piece of wood to the underside of the lid, which helps secure the lid. The receptacle is made from 3 pieces of ivory hammered together with brass rivets, the center is a large, curved piece of ivory that is hollowed out, with the other two pieces as end caps. All are heavily polished and quite lustrous. Storage boxes for chewing tobacco or snuff mixed with ash, were often finely carved from bone or wood, to keep the cherished tobacco dry. Rare Dutch silver tobacco box. Elongated form box with rounded corners and a hinged lid. Top of the lid features three medallion repousse decorations depicting various scenes with people; meandering flowers and foliage fill the space between the medallions. Sides of the box feature eight portrait medallions. Stippled monogram "JBB" on the bottom. Hallmarked on the bottom with a ca. 1694 Amsterdam hallmark, an unidentified mark and the axe mark, which was used 1853-1927 as a tax mark for old silver items bearing older silver marks, that had come back into circulation. Top margin on the front of the box bears maker's initials "P R" and an unidentified hallmark of a crowned letter "O" within an oval cartouche. Overall this box measures approx. 1-1/4"T x 2"W x 6-1/2"L. Approx. 7.05 troy oz.

Charming 20th C. Inuit Wood Whale Effigy Snuff Box: Native American, Northern United States, Alaska, Inuit, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden snuff box in the form a charming whale! The lower jaw and stomach form the lid and come apart from the rest of the body entirely to reveal the hollow storage cavity. The whale borders between stylized and cartoonish, with a rounded, humped back, circular eyes, and open mouth with incised rows of teeth. His blow hole is incised and burnished on the center of his back as well.
