Don Balke (B. 1933) "Blue Jay": Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Blue Jay" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U. S. 13c Blue Jay stamp issued June 10, 1978. . . One of the most easily recognized and best known birds in North America is the handsomely crested Blue Jay. Originally a bird of the woods, the Blue Jay has now adapted itself to urban parks and gardens. Well known for its mimicry, the Blue Jay is particularly adept at imitating the harsh screams of several hawks. It often screeches at cats and snakes or merely for the pleasure of making a raucous shout. The Blue Jay displays its versatile vocal repertoire most often in autumn, when other birds are quiet. Most familiar of all is the fretful shriek of jay, jay, jay. Henry Thoreau remarked on the "unrelenting steel-cold scream of a jay, unmelted, that never flows into a song, a sort of wintry trumpet, screaming cold; hard, tense, frozen music, like the winter sky itself. " However, Blue Jays become silent and furtive during the nesting season. After a courtship in which the male ceremoniously feeds his mate, the pair collect twigs which they haul around until a suitable nest site is found. Unlike many birds, Blue Jays eat almost anything from acorns to mice. In fact, Blue Jays have acquired a dishonorable reputation as devourers of eggs and the young of songbirds. Occasionally, Jays do attack and kill other birds, but they do not endanger the survival of any species. Cunning, inquisitive, full of mischief in the woods, the Blue Jay is part court jester and part colorful, blustery prince. . . Image Size: 13. 5 x 14. 5 in. . Overall Size: 14 x 17 in. . Unframed. . NECKLACE W/ OLMEC JADE BEADS, DUCK HEAD PENDANTPre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec culture, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A stunning necklace comprised of nearly 100 ancient beads carved from omphacite jade, turquoise, with cast gold beads and a jadeite bird pendant at the center. The terminal ends of the strand are strung with dozens of jade seed beads. The larger tubular, disc, and rectangular beads are each flanked with 7 petite hollow 80% gold (equivalent to 19K+) spherical and tubular beads. The large tubular mottle green blue beads are omphacite, the rarest of all jade varieties. The pendant at the center is carved as a duck head with a prominent crest. The duck's round cranium gracefully flows and tapers to the slender beak. The nostrils and eyes are drilled into the surface and a reddish pigment, perhaps cinnabar is applied to the recessed areas. The beads are strung in modern times with a gold-plated clasp which makes this a wearable accessory. Size of necklace: 20" L (50.8 cm); pendant: 2" L x 1" W (5.1 cm x 2.5 cm); gold quality: 80% (equivalent to 19K+)
This piece is replete with ancient symbolism, for green stones such as jade were precious materials that represented fertility. Ducks were viewed as sacred animals of the watery realm and the sky world, as they could both dive deep under water and fly long distances through the air. The Muscovy duck is the earliest domesticated duck species in South America and has a distinctive bumpy, red face and sometimes a crest.
This piece has been searched against the Art Loss Register database and has been cleared. The Art Loss Register maintains the world's largest database of stolen art, collectibles, and antiques.

Lot of 2 Costa Rican Stone Celts - Jade and Greenstone: **Originally Listed At $500**. . Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 250 to 800 CE. A lovely pair of avian axe god celt pendants - the lighter green celt finely carved from jade, the darker green celt finely carved from greenstone - both depicting a bird or bird-shaman figure with abstract beaked visages topped by banded headdresses or crest feathers. In the Pre-Columbian World, birds were regarded as animals of the celestial realm that served as messengers between humankind and their deities. Both are also drilled through the headbands for suspension. Two fine examples from the ancients of Costa Rica. Size of largest: 0. 625" W x 2. 125" H (1. 6 cm x 5. 4 cm). . The value of jade in the Pre-Columbian world lay in its symbolic power; scholars believe its color was associated with water and vegetation. Costa Rica, along with Mesoamerica, is one of the two regions where jade was extensively carved in the Pre-Columbian world. The earliest example of worked jade, a pendant excavated from a burial site on the Nicoya Peninsula, dated to the mid-first millennium BCE. It appears that jade continued to be carved into personal ornaments, usually depicting anthropomorphic deities or animals such as birds, monkeys, or frogs, until approximately 700 CE when gold became the favored material to fashion such ornaments. . . Arthur Singer (1917 - 1990) "Cardinal & Carnation": Arthur Singer (1917 - 1990) "Cardinal and Red Carnation" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 20c Ohio: Cardinal and Red Carnation stamp issued on April 14, 1982. . . Cardinal - The male Cardinal brings the female tidbits of berries and insects during the two weeks that she incubates the three bluish-white eggs spotted with brown. While she prepares another nest for a second set of eggs, the male often takes complete charge of the fledglings, feeding them grasshoppers and beetles. So strong is the male Cardinal's instinct to feed young birds that he sometimes thrusts food down the throats of nestlings of other species. When out of the nest, the fledglings wear a plumage even browner and duller than their mother's garb, but soon their undersides turn lighter and the crests of the young male birds become reddish in color. Red Carnation - The Red Carnation, a European native, has been cultivated for the last two thousand years. Its name is derived from the Latin carnis, flesh, because the flower is commonly thought of as being pale pink, or flesh-colored. It was honored with the title of state flower of Ohio in memory of President William McKinley. He was born in Niles, Ohio, in 1843, and it was his favorite flower. More than one hundred varieties of Carnations have been developed by man from the original wild pink, which had only five petals. Carnations come in many colors, all with highly fragrant flowers. Some varieties have a narrow edging of a second color trimming the petals. . . Image Size: 11. 75 x 13. 75 in. . Overall Size: 17. 5 x 19. 5 in. . Unframed. . Ivan Kozlov (B. 1937) Crested Shelducks in Flight: Ivan Kozlov (Russian, B. 1937) "Crested Shelducks in Flight" Original Watercolor painting on Paper. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting is the original painting which appeared on the 1995 Russia Duck Conservation Stamp - Crested Shelduck issued September 1, 1995. . . The Crested Shelduck was last officially spotted in 1971. Thus, there is little hope that this bird survives today. Named for the tuft that flows from its head, the Crested Shelduck was believed to inhabit northeast Asia, but unfortunately, little is known about this unique species. Interestingly, representations of this scarce bird appear in both Chinese and Japanese works of art. In fact, these pictures indicate that as early as the 19th century this duck was already something of a curiosity and seemingly rare. Some conservationists still believe that this bird may continue to thrive in remote areas of the world. With just three documented sightings of Crested Shelducks during this century, information about breeding, habitat and voice calls is unknown. However, descriptions of the Crested Shelduck have been fairly consistent for both the adult male and female (no juveniles have been spotted). According to these sources, the drake's crown, drooping crest, upper mantle and breast are greenish-black. This species also possesses wings with white and black flight feathers interspersed with greenish-black plumes. The female's general coloring is more subdued. Its breast and body are mostly brown with gray underparts, while the hen's head has a dark green crown and a drooping crest. A distinctive white ring around each eye readily distinguishes the female from male Crested Shelducks. . . Image Size: 6. 75 x 9. 75 in. . Overall Size: 10. 75 x 13. 25 in. . Unframed. . Don Balke (B. 1933) "Red Cardinal": Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Red Cardinal" Signed lower middle. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U. S. 13c Red Cardinal stamp issued June 10, 1978. . . Only the summer tanager matches the male Cardinal in full red color, but the tanager lacks the pronounced crest which the Cardinal proudly displays. A black mask, a stout coral red bill, and dark red feet also distinguish the Cardinal from other species. So brilliant is his color that he was named Cardinal for the scarlet robes of a church dignitary. The female's dress is much more subdued. She has an olive-gray back, dull reddish wings and crest, and soft pink-brown underparts. They remain together throughout the year, though in the early winter months the bond may be relaxed. Unlike the female of most species, the female Cardinal is as skilled a vocalist as the male. They may sing in any month, but on spring mornings when paired birds perch and play in the tops of trees, the countryside awakens to their rich, penetrating music. "During the love season, " Audubon claims, "the song is emitted with increased emphasis by this proud musician, who, as if aware of his powers, swells his throat, spreads his rosy tail, droops his wings, and leans alternately to the right and left, as if on the eve of expiring with delight at the delicious sounds of his own voice. " Yet some listeners prefer the female's softer music to the male's sometimes piercing notes. Found virtually everywhere in North America, the Cardinal flits about canals, and nests in bushes along banks. Just as often, the Cardinal's nest may be hidden in a thicket, or in a sapling. . . 9th C. Viking Gilded Silver Borre-Style Pendants, Beads: Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. late 9th to mid 10th century CE. This is an incredible collection of silver and gilt borre-style pendants and beads for a Viking warrior of a very elite and high status. The strand features 15 ancient pendants and spherical beads. The pendants are ovoid and hollow, with a flat verso and a slightly domed frontside that has a stylized embossed bird with a human head. Another stylized bird with a crest perches to one side. This is perhaps a representation of Odin with a raven in the style of Boh, or it could be Rarog's falcon, with arms at the ends of its wings. The spherical beads are textured like twisted rope coiled to create tubular shapes. The uniqueness of the piece is in its completeness and beauty. Finding a singular pendant is common, but here we have a complete set of matching pendants with sharp iconography interspersed with beads. Most likely the set was made by a highly skilled jeweler for a prominent member of society. These silver pieces are strung on a modern cord, and could be made wearable by a professional jeweler.
