*FAMOUS RANGER FRANK HAMER OWNED FIRST GENERATION COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 32 WCF (32-20). SN 258183. Blue & case colored with 5-1/2” bbl, 1-line address with caliber marking on left side. It has unnumbered Rampant Colt hard rubber grips. Accompanied by a signed, notarized statement/bill of sale dated Dec. 9, 1981 from Frank A. Hamer, Jr. to Raymond Brown, wherein he states that “This gun was in possession of Ed Putnam alias Ed Sibley in Del Rio, Texas on December 1, 1906. When he was in a gunfight with four Texas Rangers Captain John H. Rodgers, Ranger Marvin Bailey, Ranger Duke Hudson and my father Frank Hamer who had joined the Ranger service on April of the same year. He was 21 years of age. This was the first gunfight that my father participated in after he joined the Ranger service. Before his career had ended he had begun as Senior Captain of the Ranger force and had participated in more than 100 gunfights. Earlier that morning December 1st, Ed murdered a prominent Del Rio rancher named Mr. Cawthorn. Mr. Putnam shot Mr. Cawthorn with a 9 milimeter Luger pistol. The details of this shooting and why Mr. Cawthorn was murdered is documented in the book, I’m Frank Hamer. Sometime after the shooting Captain Rogers gave the above described pistol to my father and said something to the effect that since this was my father’s first gunfight as a Ranger he thought he should have a momento of the occasion. This gun along with the Luger pistol and Winchester rifle, that was also a 32WCF caliber, were the guns Ed Putnam was using in the gunfight with the Rangers.” This incident is related on pp. 29 & 30 of I’m Frank Hamer, Frost & Jenkins. Captain Frank Hamer was one of the most famous of all Texas Rangers and perhaps received his greatest notoriety for successfully tracking down and shooting the notorious outlaw killers Bonnie & Clyde. Louis John Rhead (1857-1926)
A Cool Spot in Leafy June, 1902
signed "Louis Rhead" lower right
oil on canvas, 20 by 27 1/4 in.
Louis John Rhead was a highly respected illustrator during the Golden Age of Illustration from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. He was born in England to a family who for generations had been artistically involved in the pottery industry in Stoke-on-Trent. His father, George Woolliscroft Rhead, had a particular gift for pottery design and four of his eleven children entered the field. At the age of thirteen, Louis went to France for three years to study under Gustave Boulanger, with whom contemporary Frank W. Benson also studied. Upon returning to England he apprenticed at Mintons, the china factory, before winning a scholarship to the South Kensington Art School in London. He designed posters and book jackets for the English publisher Cassell. In 1883, an American publishing house called Appleton, offered him the position of art director which he accepted and subsequently moved to New York. In addition to his book illustrations, his poster work for periodicals including "Century," "Scribner's," "The Bookman," "The New York Sun," and "The Morning Journal" were highly regarded. He collaborated with his brother George Wooliscroft Rhead to illustrate John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" and Alfred Lord Tennyson's "Idylls of the King." In all, Rhead authored seven books on angling; the first of which was "The Speckled Brook Trout." Additionally, he illustrated many children's books, including "Swiss Family Robinson," "Gulliver's Travels," and "Treasure Island." Rhead was an accomplished painter, designer, and author. He was a member of the New York Watercolor Society and the Architectural League.
Rhead's painting "A Cool Spot in Leafy June" captures the moment of truth when the trout is brought to net. The artist has masterfully painted a cold water stream in June. Sunlight dapples on the surface and shadows flicker across the rocks. The fisherman is completely focused on his task, oblivious to his rapt audience peering down from the bridge. His pipe is clenched between his teeth as he holds the bent fly rod high in his right hand while a creel is slung over his right shoulder. At the ready, he scoops his net through the water toward the tiring fish. The viewer anticipates the next second when the fish will be safely in the angler's net. Rhead's composition, especially his noteworthy use of light and shadow, reflects his talent and training.

DOGON TELLEM FIGURE
MALI carved wood, standing on an integral circular base, the legs bent at the knees, the left arm raised, the right held to the side, shown with a long beard and iron rod protrding from the head, raised on a bespoke wooden mount24.1cm unmountedProvenance:Frank Freidman, United StatesKarim Deen, Nyack, United StatesAndrew Chierniavsky, London, United KingdomNote:The Tellem (literally "those who were before us") peoples are believed to have occupied the Bandiagara Escarpment in central Mali until the arrival of the Dogon peoples in the sixteenth century. They are particularly well known for producing enigmatic stylised figures. These sometimes centuries-old objects were kept in the shelters or caves of the Bandiagara cliff that were difficult to access. They were repeatedly treated with offerings over many years, producing the distinctive thick, cracked, patination seen here. The pose of raising the arms has been widely interpreted as an invocation for rain.
