An account of the Arctic regions, with a history and description of the Arctic whale-fishery. Edinburgh: Archibald Constable and Co., 1820. 8vo, First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, [xx, 552, 82; viii, 574], half titles, 20 engraved plates, 4 maps & 4 folding tables, some folding, half-titles, Northern Lighthouse stamp on reverse of title, titles and frontispieces foxed, folding plate torn without loss; [Idem] Journal of a voyage to the Northern whale-fishery; including researches and discoveries on the Eastern coast of West Greenland. Note: Scoresby accompanied his father on numerous voyages to the Arctic whale fishery, on which he began to study the meteorology and natural history of the polar regions. In 1813 he established for the first time that the polar ocean has a warmer temperature at considerable depths than it has on the surface. He attended Edinburgh University, corresponded with Sir Joseph Banks and Robert Jameson, was elected a member of the Wernerian Society of Edinburgh and in 1819 a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 1816 he made his first search for the North-West Passage. His 1820 work, An Account of the Arctic Regions and Northern Whale Fishery gave the results of his observations on the Arctic , as well as those of previous navigators. In his voyage of 1822 to Greenland Scoresby charted 400 miles of the east coast, thus contributing to the first real and important geographic knowledge of East Greenland. As an active member and official of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, he contributed to the knowledge of terrestial magnetism and optics. Sabin 78167 & 78171; Hill 1543

Provenance : unidentified early signature in ink (verso of title and at foot of penultimate leaf); Sir William Stirling Maxwell (large circular armorial bookplate on front pastedown and ink inscription on front free endpaper); Keir Arts of Design (bookplate on rear pastedown).the stirling maxwell copy of the second folio edition (first published in 1543) of the most important anatomical treatise of the sixteenth century: an excellent copy . “The young Vesalius, with an iconoclastic zeal characteristic of the sixteenth century, and a forcible style all his own, endeavoured to do all that Galen had done and to do it better. The result was 'The Structure of the Human Body', published when he was twenty-nine; a complete anatomical and physiological study of every part of the human body, based on first-hand examination and his five years' experience as public prosector in the medical school at Padua. The five books deal with the bones and muscles, blood vessels, nerves, abdominal viscera, thoracic organs and the brain. Galen was not merely improved upon: he was superseded; and the history of anatomy is divided into two periods, pre-Vesalian and post-Vesalian. The Fabrica , a handsomely printed folio, is remarkable for its series of magnificent plates, which set new technical standards of anatomical illustrations, and indeed of book illustration in general. They have generally been ascribed to an artist of Titian's school, long (but no longer) thought to be Jan Stephen van Calcar (1499-c. 1550). Vesalius's was the most splendid and the most comprehensive of a large number of anatomical treatises of the sixteenth century. The second edition (1555) used the same plates (the woodblocks actually survived in Germany until the Second World War) but contains minor variations in the text. No other work of the sixteenth century equals it” ( Printing and the Mind of Man ).“This edition contains Vesalius’ final revisions of the text, along with significant typographical improvements and refinements. Oporinus set the second folio edition in larger type (forty-nine instead of fifty-seven lines per page), which required recutting of all the small initials letters so that they could fit seven lines of the new type. Oporinus also used heavier and finer paper for the second edition, and improved the presswork so that the second edition is a superior example of bookmaking” (Norman Library). HAMILTON, Alexander (1739-1802).Report of the Secretary of the Treasury , read in the House of Representatives of the United States, January 19th, 1795; containing a Plan for the further support of Public Credit. Philadelphia: John Fenno, 1795. Octavo (9x5 ½ inches, 230x140 mm). 6 (of 10) folding tables. Stitched self-wrappers, uncut. Condition: Foxing, torn area at head of title. hamilton's second report on public credit and his final report as secretary of the treasury. This second report on public credit largely reiterates the arguments put forth in his seminal first report of 1790, but with more detail and sections on the taxation of public funds and the nature of credit during war. this copy with extensive marginalia concerning defaulted bills of credit issued by the states. A contemporary, apparently Massachusetts owner of this copy, has written a lengthy note covering the lower margins of pages 53-68, in part: “…It is therefore clear as the sun at noon day, that if the State continues to refuse payment (in the same manner she loaned them) to the citizens who now hold them, she will violate every principle of good faith & justice, and entail on government eternal infamy…Is it possible the present government should be lost to all conception of the infinite importance of Public Credit...”This copy lacking the terminal 4 folding tables. The tables were issued in two states: on 10 separate sheets or on both sides of 5 sheets. The latter suggests a paper shortage. Evans 29772; Ford 267; Howes H122; Sabin 29980.
