Chinese Ming Carved Wood Panel w/ Three Qilins: **First Time At Auction**. . East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A fabulous carved-wood panel of rectangular form featuring the high relief scene of three abstract zoomorphs known as qilins, displaying scaled bodies, dragon-like heads, beards, carp fish whiskers, antlers, cloven hooves, and fish tails. The three mythical beings appear to be placed in the sky with the left-most creature sitting on an orb, the central animal on a tuft of clouds, and the right-most on a type of flying board with a long tassel at its end. Sinuous embellishments, perhaps representing wind, ribbons, or vines, swirl around our main figures, as a sphere and book float above the central animal. Please note that Lucite stand is for photography purposes only. Size: 23. 75" W x 7. 5" H (60. 3 cm x 19 cm). . Qilin are believed to appear upon the passing or arrival of a revered leader, interpreted as a good omen of peace and prosperity. Though appearing beast-like, these eccentric hybrids are said to refuse to walk upon grass for fear of harming a single blade, and thus are frequently depicted walking upon water or clouds, as they are in this example. They can become fierce, however, if a pure person is threatened by a malicious one. . . 19th C. Chinese Qing Carved Wood Flying Lohan (Arhat): East Asia, China, Late Qing dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A fine wooden carving of a flying Lohan (Arhat) holding a strand with coins of fortune, skillfully rendered with impressive details on both sides. On the front, the figure assumes a dramatic pose below the boughs of a leafy tree, with a lizard-like creature below, while on the verso, the sculptor rendered the back of the figure surrounded by clouds of the celestial realm. In Mahayana Buddhism, Arhats (or Lohans in Chinese) were understood as the original followers of Buddha who followed the Eightfold Path and attained the Four Stages of Enlightenment and deliverance from mere earthly existence. Lohans or Arhats are known for possessing immense wisdom, fortitude, bravery in the face of evil, and supernatural powers. They have become known as the guardian angels of Buddhist temples. Size: 22. 875" W x 23. 375" H (58. 1 cm x 59. 4 cm); 25. 375" H (64. 5 cm) on included custom stand. . In Theravada Buddhist traditions, an Arhat is regarded as a 'perfected person' who has attained Nirvana. In other Buddhist traditions the term has been used for people far advanced along the path of Enlightenment but who have not reached full Buddhahood. It is thought that Arhats have successfully arrived at what is known as the 'other shore' and are at peace for all eternity. Gone are all 'asavas' or desires for sensual pleasure, incorrect viewpoints, and ignorance. A lovely sculpture of this revered spiritual being. . . Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; Ex M. Kobiashi collection, Hawaii USA, 1960-2000. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. . We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. . #161520 Condition A few expected age cracks and chips/perforations to surface. Upper periphery is rough hewn, as are some areas of the peripheries. Overall, the carving is impressive with wonderful details. The veneer of the stand has a few reattached sections and scuffs.

WILFRED MOLSON BARNESAmerican, 1892-1955Clipper Ship Flying Cloud off Tuskar Rock". Signed lower right "W.M. Barnes". The Flying Cloud is easily one of the most famous ships in U.S. history. Built in Boston in 1851 by Donald McKay, the ship achieved instant fame when she sailed from New York to San Francisco in just over 89 days, less than half the time it took most vessels. She would break her own record again in 1853, which would last an astounding 136 years. It is also interesting to note that the captain's wife, Eleanor Creesy, was the navigator of the record setting voyages, a unique occurrence in a then almost exclusively male-dominated profession.Oil on canvas, 27" x 33". American School, 19th Century The Battle of Bunker Hill American School, 19th Century The Battle of Bunker Hill Unsigned. Watercolor and gouache on paper, 15 x 19 1/2 in., in a later molded wood frame. Condition: Minor toning. Note: This painting is a fanciful interpretation of the Battle of Bunker Hill as seen from Boston across the Charles River at Hudson Point. Charlestown's fortifications are clearly marked with red and blue banners on Bunker Hill, Breed's Hill, and Fort Castle William. The position of these hills was critical to a military occupation of Boston as they would provide the controlling army with a view of Boston and its harbor. On June 17, 1775, under heavy bombardment by the British, Charlestown caught fire and is represented here engulfed in clouds of gray smoke. The white rail fences which enclose the town, and which are so prominently depicted, were decisive in the Patriots' victory. The Colonial militia erected this series of fences to thwart the advance of the British troops. To negotiate the fences, the Redcoats were forced to break their ordered march, causing them to lose their discipline and momentum, and ultimately the battle. The painting was probably done by an academy student in the early 19th century. The form of the flags shown is anachronistic. During this period, the Revolutionary army flew the Grand Union Flag. It was not until June 14, 1777, that the Continental Congress adopted the flag of stars and stripes which is seen flying from the ships in the harbor foreground. The arrangement of these ships was probably derived from a contemporary print, possibly the early views of Boston published by Carrington Bowles. Stylistically, the painting relates to an oil painting titled Attack on Bunker's Hill with the Burning of the Burning of Charlestown June 17, 1775, at the National Gallery of Art. Estimate $25,000-35,000 The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Hopi Assassin Fly Kachina "Kokopala", Delbert Phillips: Hopi Assassin Fly Kachina, "Kokopala" by Delbert Phillips. Dimensions (overall): 8"h. Provenance: Purchased on Ebay from Lenny Bickford, Windham, NH. $69. 99. 08/09/15. Previously owned by collector, Rich Hacker, who sold it in 2012. Ì_ Beautifully hand-carved and painted, this Kokopala is truly unique. With a piece of cottonwood root that would seem unusable to most carvers, Phillips shows true ingenuity and talent by turning a fault into an unexpected and surprising gift. He creates a lovely bas relief depicting a Hopi village and foliage inside the knot of the wood, and then continues this subtractive sculptural language around the back in depicting clouds being brought by the music of Kokopala himself. Artist signature on underside of base. Ì_ Delbert Phillips is the son and pupil of prize winning carver Bradford Phillips. With this doll he shows both mastery of craft and a keen talent for storytelling. Ì_ Processing and shipping within the continental U. S. $29. 99 plus 1. 5% replacement cost insurance.
