Michael Garland (B. 1952) "Santa Working on Toy": Michael Garland (American, B. 1952) "Santa Working on Toy" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U. S. 32c Santa Claus Working on Sled stamp issued September 30, 1995. . . Most of our modern American Christmas practices stem from those brought here by immigrants from various countries in the 19th century. An important part of an English Victorian Christmas included a large feast on Christmas day. Beginning in the afternoon, the extended family would sit down for a lunch that typically consisted of soups, stuffed turkey, plum pudding and mincemeat pie. Afterward the family retired to the sitting room for games and conversation. Later, an elaborate tea was served. The principle meal of the day began in the late evening. At this meal the hostesses served trout, a suckling pig roasted whole on the spit, candy and cake, and several varieties of wine. During the 1800s, the use of lights became an important aspect of Christmas. Part of the allure of lights arose from the traditional biblical account of the Christmas story, which told of the wise men being led to Jesus by a bright shining star. Celebrations with lights varied from country to country. In Spain, children carried lamps on poles and lined city streets to guide the three kings. In Germany, houses were dark while children were led into a room where candles lit up the Christmas tree. In Sweden, young women would risk burning their hair while wearing bonnets of candles on their head. Wearing white dresses, they would bring music and coffee to their parents in the wee hours on St. Lucia's day. The image of Santa Claus on this First Day Cover portrays a more universal Christmas tradition in many areas of the world. . . Image Size: 14. 25 x 12. 25 in. . Overall Size: 20 x 14. 75 in. . Don Balke (B. 1933) "Bald Eagle": Don Balke (B. 1933) "Bald Eagle" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U. S. 29c Eagle Self-adhesive stamp issued February 4, 1994. . . When Congress selected the Bald Eagle as America's national symbol on June 20, 1782, Ben Franklin voiced his opposition, suggesting the turkey would be more fitting. Further evidence of Franklin's displeasure was documented in a letter to his daughter Sarah. In it he referred to the Eagle as "a bird of bad moral character" and "a rank coward. " However, ornithologists refute Franklin's claims about the national symbol's cowardice. Furthermore, its moral character seems to be beyond reproach. It is believed that Bald Eagles mate for life and may live together for more than 20 years, returning to the same breeding site year after year to improve upon their nest. After 200 years of serving as America's symbol, the Eagle was even awarded its own day of recognition. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed June 20th Bald Eagle Day. This handsome bird also acts as the symbol of the U. S. Postal Service and has appeared on a number of American postage stamps throughout the years. Frequently portrayed on airmail stamps, the Eagle has been depicted in flight, in silhouette and as part of the Great Seal of the United States. . . Image Size: 12. 25 x 13. 75 in. . Yan Bingwu & Yang Wenqing "Dogbane Beetle": Yan Bingwu (Chinese, B. 1954) & Yang Wenqing (Chinese, B. 1951) "Dogbane Beetle" Signed lower right. Watercolor on Silk/Rice Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . . This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 33¢ Dogbane Beetle Classic Collection Series stamp issued October 1, 1999. . . The Dogbane is a species of leaf beetle from the family Chrysomelidae and is one of 1, 400 species found in North America. Classified as Chrysochus auratus, the Dogbane Beetle is ovoid in shape and boasts antennae about half as long as its body. Although many leaf beetles feed on the leaves of specific plants, the Dogbane Beetle consumes plant roots instead of leaves. Leaf beetles proceed through four distinct stages in their life cycle -- egg, larva, pupa and adult. They lay eggs in groups on the underside of food plant leaves. Depending on the temperature, the eggs hatch in two to seven days and soon afterwards the tiny larvae begin feeding on their nutrient-rich eggshells. When all the eggshells are consumed, the larvae start to eat the leaves of the host plant. The next stage of the cycle is the pupa stage, in which the larvae enter an inactive state of metamorphosis, after which they emerge as adults, the final stage of their life cycle. The Dogbane Beetle's life cycle differs from the typical leaf beetle. The adults lay their eggs on the underside of dogbane leaves, where they're enclosed in a cone of fecal matter that the hatching larvae must chew through to escape. Zou Jianjun (B. 1943) "Year of the Tiger": Zou Jianjun (Chinese, B. 1943) "Year of the Tiger" Stamped in the lower left. Original Watercolor painting. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32c The Year of the Tiger Lunar New Year Series stamp issued January 5, 1998. . . The Chinese calendar, or Sheng Xiao, is a combination of symbolism and mathematical complexities. The Sheng Xiao dates back to antiquity, possibly originating during the reign of Emperor Huang in 2637 B. C. Inscriptions of this system on animal bones have been excavated at the Yin Ruins of Anyang, Henan. Twelve animals are associated with the calendar -- the rat, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, serpent, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. The Sheng Xiao consists of repeating 12 year cycles, with 1998 being the Year of the Tiger. Those born in a given year are said to share that animal's character traits. Thus, people born during the Year of the Tiger are powerful, ambitious, determined, yet also kind. One of the legends surrounding the origins of this system tells how Buddha ascended to heaven. Twelve animals came to send him off and Buddha assigned them their places in the calendar according to the order of their arrival. The rat showed up first and the boar last. In ancient times, the Sheng Xiao played a great role in people's lives by providing guidance in decisions regarding marriage and childbirth. The Chinese year begins with the second new moon after the winter solstice, sometime between January 21 and February 20. Unlike the Western New Year, which is always January 1st, the Chinese New Year can fall on any of 31 days. New Year's Day is a time of great celebration and is the most important day in the Chinese calendar. . . Image Size: 12. 25 x 11 in. . Overall Size: 14. 5 x 12. 5 in. . Unframed. . Mel Crawford (B. 1925) A Winter Sleigh Ride: Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "A Winter Sleigh Ride" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 35c Merry Christmas Joyeux Noel 1980 stamp issued October 22, 1980. . . The hustle and bustle of cities has always added a special excitement to the Christmas season. All across North America, cities and towns annually don their holiday veneer of lights and tinsel to celebrate the season. And, each Christmas the decorations seem to become more elaborate as individual homes decorate doorways or roofs and lawns blossom with lights of red, blue, green, and orange. Merchants, always at the forefront of the fun, create fanciful wonderlands for their customers with store front windows soon ablaze with enchanting exhibitions of tinsel and glitter. Indoors and out, the decorations call out a city-wide Merry Christmas to all who pass by. In most cities, Christmas turns parking lots into crowded Christmas tree forests and often a grand parade honors the Yuletide season for all who dare venture out in the frigid weather. Throughout America holiday excitement abides in every heart and a Christmas greeting stirs on every lip. In Canada's Montreal, the excitement is as intense as in any other city on the continent. And though the painting on this First Day Cover recalls Montreal in a quieter time, the festivities were just as heartfelt then as they are today. The particularly delightful scene on the stamp, no doubt a nostalgic one for modern day Canadians, first appeared on Canada's early Christmas cards. Created in the 1930s by the renowned Couttes Company, these Christmas cards soon became a favorite Canadian Christmas tradition that endures even today. . . Image Size: 14 x 12 in. . Mel Crawford (B. 1925) "Shepherd Seeing Star": Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Shepherd Seeing Star of Bethlehem" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U. S. 20c Christmas stamp issued October 28, 1981. . . And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the Angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:8-11). Through the centuries, the events and miracles associated with the life of Christ were witnessed, remembered, and retold for generations to come. An excellent example is Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli's rendition of the Madonna and Child which brilliantly brings forth the deep mutual love Mother and Child feel for one another. Indeed, exemplary of Botticelli's tendency toward naturalism in art, this particular Madonna and Child tempera-on-panel portrait is one of the loveliest and most heartwarming paintings ever created. Today few painters are more popular than Botticelli. His paintings are distinctive for their clear, rhythmic line, delicate color, lavish decoration, and poetic feeling. This moving portrayal of the Madonna and Child by Botticelli now hangs in the Chicago Art Institute in Chicago, Illinois. The Botticelli: Art Institute of Chicago United States Christmas stamp featured on this First Day Cover was issued in Chicago on October 28, 1981. . . Image Size: 14 x 11. 75 in. . Chris Calle (B. 1961) "World Stamp Expo '89": Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "World Stamp Expo '89" Signed lower left. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U. S. 25c World Stamp Expo '89 issued March 16, 1989. . . Retired schoolteacher Rowland Hill wrote a booklet in 1837 explaining what he saw as flaws in the postal system. At that time, postal charges were based on the number of sheets in a letter and the distance it traveled, and were usually collected from the recipient. Hill felt this was inefficient -- time was wasted figuring charges and many charges went unpaid because the system carried letters that recipients refused to accept. Hill proposed a prepaid penny-per-half-ounce rate for all letters, no matter what distance they traveled. The postmaster general was initially appalled by this wild, visionary and extravagant proposal, but it was adopted in 1839, nonetheless. Stamps and postage-paid envelopes, first issued in 1840, were much like those now in use; their form has changed little since. Collectors appeared immediately, soon followed by the first stamp catalogues -- within twenty years, they were showing twelve hundred stamps issued by a hundred different entities. Today, the enormous numbers of stamp collectors, and stamps to be collected, have made the pursuit a highly organized hobby. Regularly issued catalogues describe almost every stamp available and list current prices. Since the early 1920's, the first day of issue of every stamp has been an occasion for philatelic celebration in the United States, and since 1937 ceremonies have included the use of a special postmark. The stamp featured on this First Day Cover commemorates the 1989 World Stamp Expo. . . Image Size: 16. 25 x 13. 25 in. . Overall Size: 23. 25 x 20. 5 in. . Unframed. .
