Murchison (Sir Roderick Impey baronet geologist and geographer 1792-1871) On Earthquakes autograph manuscript 14pp. some corrections some in pencil folds slightly browned first f. loose unbound docketed: "Read in the Newry Literary Society Jan 1835" folio January 1835."Our own Island has long been happily free from subterranean movements: & yet our Mountains & Coast exhibit many undoubted remanants of such violent movements in former periods. The Giant's Causeway is probably nothing else than a stream of cooled lava; & in some of our highest mountains & headlands the exuviae of the ocean are to be met with in great abundance. Most of you may have witnessed symptoms ofthis description. In one of the highest & most abrupt mountains in the county of Derry I have myself seen a great variety of sea-shells such as the winkle the mussel the sea-urchin the cockspur & many others imbedded in white limestone & filled with the same substance. Among the rest I met with many pieces several inches long of what had all the appearances of the stalk of the sea-weed commonly called Tangle in a petrified state having the small central tube filled with white limestone which must of course have been in a state of fusion at the period of its introduction there." - Murchison.Provenance: "Read in the Newry Literary Society Jan 1835."; not traced by The Geological Societ Library Burlington House Piccadilly.
