STUART, James (1713-1788) and Nicholas REVETT (1720-1804).The Antiquities of Athens. measured and delineated. Volume II edited by William Newton (1735-1790), volume III by Willey Reveley (1760-1799), volume IV by Joseph Woods (1776-1864). London: 'printed by John Haberkorn' [vol. I], 'printed by John Nichols' [vols II-III], T. Bensley for J. Taylor [vol. IV], Priestley and Weale [vol. V], 1762-1830. 5 volumes (530 x 355 mm). Half-title to vol.V, 5pp. list of subscribers in vol.I, 3pp. list of subscribers in vol.V, small format "Errata" slip pasted to verso of final page of list of subscribers on vol.I, 'Errata and Additional Observations' leaf at the end of vol. III. Engraved portrait of Stuart by and after Charles Knight from vol. II bound as a frontispiece in vol. I, engraved portrait frontispiece of Revett by Isaac Taylor after Ramsay in vol. IV, and engraved portrait frontispieces of Stuart and Revett by W.C. Edwards after Proven and Ramsay in vol. V. 369 engraved plans, measured drawings, and plates by J. Basire, C. Grignion, J. Newton, W. Skelton, and others after Stuart, Revett, W. Pars, W. Reveley, and others (3 double-page, 6 folding), 1 folding engraved map of Greece, engraved title-vignettes, numerous engraved illustrations, and head- and tailpieces. Vols.I-IV: uniform diced Russia gilt, the covers blocked with the arms of the Earl of Clare; vol.V: half calf over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards. Condition: browning and spotting, occasionally heavy; all five volumes uniformly re-backed to style, with expert repairs to corners. Provenance: John FitzGibbon, 2nd Earl of Clare (1792-1851, binding)rare complete set of 'the first publication in english devoted to the athenian monuments' (Blackmer).Stuart and Revett's original intention was to issue a 3-volume work based around a series of accurate measured drawings of the antiquities of Athens and its environs - a work that was going to take no more than four years to complete. The two artists arrived in Athens on 18 March 1751 and did not return to England until 27 October 1754. Revett quickly lost interest, and it was not until January 1763 that the first volume was published. The second volume took even longer: when Stuart died in 1788, volume II was unfinished, even though a title-page dated 1787 had been printed. The subsequent enthusiasm of the Society of Dilettanti allowed the project to continue and volume III appeared in 1794, thus completing a project that had begun over 50 years earlier. Both volumes IV and V are essentially supplements: vol.IV was issued by Josiah Taylor who had acquired all of Stuart's papers, and was thus able to offer plates of the Parthenon sculptures (the "Elgin marbles") at a time when their sale to the nation had just been completed. The final volume was published in 1830. Blackmer 1617; Brunet V, 570; Cicognara 2713; Fowler 340; Harris 857; Millard British 81.

TWO PORTRAITS OF JAMES COLLINS AND WIFE BY MILTON W. HOPKINS (CONNECTICUT/NEW YORK/OHIO 1789-1844). Oil on canvas signed and dated on the back with sitters' identities. Pleasant portraits of the parents James Collins Esq. aged thirty-nine in 1842 and Mrs. A. Collins aged thirty-six. Conservation report available. Both are 30''h. 25''w. in their original gilt frames 35''h. 30''w. Ex Sumpter Priddy III (Virginia). Milton W. Hopkins and the Collins Family The Connecticut-born artist Milton W. Hopkins (1789-1844) spent most of his life in Connecticut and New York. He began his career as a portraitist in earnest when he advertised himself as a portrait painter and instructor in Albion New York in 1833. In 1836 Hopkins packed up his wife and ten children and headed west to Ohio settling in Clermont County. Though he never sold the Clermont County farm (he would die there in 1844) he would later set up a studio in Columbus (1840-1843) and then in Cincinnati (1843-1844). Based on identified portraits Hopkins clearly traveled throughout the region for commissions. Hopkins was a fervent anti-Mason and temperance advocate and according to research by Jacquelyn Oak it may have been his growing abolitionist sentiment that drove him to Ohio. She further postulates that it is through his anti-slavery efforts that Hopkins met fellow abolitionist and lawyer James Collins Jr. while in Clermont County. Collins (b. 1802 or 1803) a lawyer married Angelina (apparently sometimes called Margaret) in 1830 and had four children. Documenting their location(s) is somewhat challenging but Oak's research places them in Clermont County during Hopkins's residency and later in Illinois (always as an active member of the abolition movement). As an attorney Collins may well have spent time in Columbus (perhaps visiting Hopkins in his studio which was very near the Ohio Statehouse). The 1850 Federal Census locates the Collins family in New Albany Indiana along the Ohio River (and in their household was an African-American girl named Anne Robertson). Hopkins painted portraits Mr. and Mrs. Collins and of their sons Alfred and James in 1842. The portrait of the younger child was painted by another artist after Hopkins's death. All of the present portraits remained together and were ''discovered'' in a Missouri attic years ago. These portraits are among the few identified examples from Hopkins's Midwestern period a fact made more important because of the shared abolitionist efforts of both artist and sitter. Additionally the double portrait of James and Alfred is the only known double portrait by Hopkins. In short this family group of portraits should be considered among the most significant Midwestern portraits of the 1840s period. References: Face to Face: M.W. EXTENSIVE GRANT WOOD ARCHIVE AN INTERESTING AND EXTENSIVE GRANT WOOD (1892-1942) ARCHIVE, CIRCA 1917-1962. Comprising original watercolor renderings, a charcoal sketch, early exhibition pamphlets and publications, photographs, articles, and clippings contained in two scrapbooks filled with over 150 pages of Grant Wood related material and presumably assembled by Fan Prescott, former Cedar Rapids Jackson High School principal and early employer and supporter of Wood and/or her family, as indicated by the commentary on some of the inserted notes found within. Of particular note are six neo-classical style watercolor interior design (home library) renderings possibly by Wood and possibly for the Van Vechten-Shaffer home, although no signatures or annotations. Each mounted on a separate scrapbook page and each executed on card stock measuring approximately 6.3 inches and height and when laid end-to-end totaling 65.75 inches. Additionally a circa 1915-20 charcoal portrait of a handsome young man measuring 10.5 inches x 9 inches (unsigned) and separated at the folds, possibly by Wood. A mimeograph copy of Grant Wood's 1921 play, “Imagination Isles.” An interesting double sided carved, painted and shingled house sign “”WILLAWOOD” thought to be made by Wood for relatives of Frances Prescott for a Minnesota cottage or cabin, 33.5 inches x 16.5 inches. Also of interest are the numerous publications including an original edition of Grant Wood's Revolt Against the City, Clio Press, Iowa City, Iowa 1935, a rare copy of the play “They That Mourn” by Grant Wood and Jewell Bothwell Tull, Dodd, Mead & Company, New York 1936, a printed and bound copy of Young Sam Clemens by Grant Wood, presumably based on a letter to Cyril Clemens of the Mark Twain Society in the 1930’s, a copy of “Art in the Daily Life of the Child”, by Grant Wood, University of Iowa Press, Child Welfare Pamphlet No. 37, published in 1939, original Stone City –Colony and Art School brochure Summer of 1932, and also for the summer of 1933, original Chicago Lakeside Press Galleries Exhibition catalog for February and March 1935 (Grant Woods preparatory drawing for Herbert Hoover’s Birth Place was loaned to this exhibition by its owner Miss Frances Prescott), a set of six printed note cards illustrated with various animals by Wood from Farm on the Hill, and dated 1936, a set of four printed note cards with envelopes displaying Woods hand colored lithographs Tame Flowers, Wild Flowers, Vegetables, and Fruit, the cover of the April 18, 1942 issue of The Saturday Evening Post displaying Woods painting Spring in Town, plus a copy of the University of Kansas Museum of Art’s retrospective exhibition catalog April 12th-May 30th 1959 and many other interesting articles and related material.Provenance:Presumably Miss Frances Prescott to her niece from whom acquired by Mr. Steven Douglas Emmons of Cedar Rapids, Iowa (circa 1980) from whom acquired by the present owner Dr. Barry Ragone, Miami Beach, Florida.Note: The archives of the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa include a number of scrapbooks from the estate of Grant Wood’s sister Nan Wood Graham (1899-1990). In one of the scrapbooks can be found, a photo of the Willawood house sign included in the offered lot together with a corresponding letter dated December 1982 as submitted by Steven Emmons for her opinion. Her reply is hand written across a photocopy of Emmons letter and reads; “This crude sign was not made by my brother, the late Grant Wood. Most likely it was made by one of Grants former students at McKinley School, signed Nan Wood Graham, Nov 15, 1983.”It should be noted however that at this time Nan Wood Graham was 84 years old and while she saw herself as a both a protector and promoter of her brothers works, she was nevertheless never considered by most experts as the recognized authority when it came to authenticating previously unrecorded works by her brother. Furthermore, the Willawood sign is very much in keeping with the type of project Wood might take on for a friend or acquaintance, as such was his nature. One might even surmise that the name of the cottage or cabin is typical of the play on words in which Wood frequently employed. Instead of Willowood, which might suggest willow trees on the property, it is likely that the title is to be read with the “W” spoken with a German pronunciation as a “V” and thereby making the title have much more sense being pronounced as “Villa Wood” and perhaps even named in honor of Wood.

Provenance: Alfred Cartwright (signature in vol.VII); Otto Salmonson (bookplate in vols.9-11); Lynn Abbott Trust.a complete set of this important record of most of the greatest orchid varieties discovered and described during the nineteenth century, with beautiful plates by john nugent fitch. The preface to the first volume lays out the aims of the publishers "The great advances which have been made within the last few years in the introduction and the cultivation of Exotic Orchids, have suggested the desirability of devoting a monthly publication to the illustration of the best forms of these singular and aristocratic plants, and also to the explanation of the most successful methods of growing them". The work was 'conducted' by Robert Warner in partnership with the publisher B.S. Williams from 1882 until the latter's death in 1890, at which point his son, Henry Williams, took over and the new partnership contiuned until the Album's conclusion in 1897. At various times these editors were helped by Thomas Moore and William Hugh Gower. The plates are by John Nugent Fitch (1840–1927) who, like his uncle Walter Hood Fitch, was a botanical artist and lithographer of the highest order. The plates in the present work together consitute his best known work. "Being of Royal Quarto size, the pages of the Album are sufficiently large to enable the artists to produce ample and intelligible portraits of the plants without their becoming cumbersome”. The resultant work offers both a fascinating insight into the state of knowledge about orchids and their cultivation, and also an unrivalled visual record by one of the great botanical artists of the day. FRANCISCO JOSE DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES, SPANISH (1746 - 1828), LOS CAPRICHOS NO. 45: MUCHO HAY QUE CHUPAR, ETCHING, 9 1/2"H X 7"W (SIGHT), 18 5/8"H X 16 1/8"W (FRAME)Francisco Jose De Goya Y Lucientes, Spanish, (1746 - 1828) Los Caprichos No. 45: Mucho hay que chupar, etching "There is plenty to suck." Los Caprichos is a set of 80 etchings created by Goya and published as an album in 1799. Provenance: Franz Bader Gallery, Washington, D.C. Biography from the Archives of AskArt: One of the more famous Spanish painters associated with influencing French Romantic painters, Francisco Goya was born in Fuendetodos, and took his earliest art lessons from his father, who was a master gilder. He also studied etching with monks in Saragossa, and then in 1776, when he was age 30, went to Madrid, where he was influenced by Giovanni Tiepolo, who did lighthearted historical genre scenes in rich coloration. In 1786, Goya became a court painter and did numerous royal portraits that had a light palette and "sparkling manner". By 1792, he was suffering ill health and had lost his hearing. During his recovery period, he did the work for which he is most known---"humanistic-biting satire on social mores with more than a hint of double meaning." And historical events turned him increasingly from more light hearted subjects. Napoleon invaded Spain in 1808, and Goya's themes reflected the cruelty and wanton killing that he observed. The Spanish monarchy was restored in 1814, and Goya who was a Republican, retired to a country home, where he, with much dampened spirit, painted with dark, somber tones. He did "Black" frescoes in his home, "pessimistic yet imaginative images of degraded and bestial humanity. . .terrible but fascinating-hallucinatory nightmares that foretell of death and destruction. He died in Bordeaux in 1828, having gone into voluntary exile in France in 1824. etching Dimensions: 9 1/2"H x 7"W (sight), 18 5/8"H x 16 1/8"W (frame)

1871-CC $20 Deeply set olive-gold color provides a pleasingly original appearance to both sides. Contrary to what many believe the 1871-CC is actually among the more sharply struck Type Two double eagles from the 1870s. The present example while moderately worn does possess ample remaining detail over all features with the exception of a few star centrils and the highest points of Liberty's portrait on the obverse. Light and moderate abrasions pepper both sides but their number is not uncommonly high for a CC-mint twenty that spent some time in circulation. After the 1870-CC the second-year 1871-CC is the rarest double eagle produced in the Carson City Mint. Only 200-250 pieces are believed extant from an original mintage of 17 387 pieces. RARE DOUBLE PORTRAIT OF ALFRED AND JAMES J. COLLINS BY MILTON W. HOPKINS (CONNECTICUT/NEW YORK/OHIO 1789-1844). Oil on canvas signed on the back. The two sons of the Collins family identified on the back with their ages of six and four in 1842. The boys hold a small whip and the pet dog. Conservation report available. 25 1/4''h. 30''w. in its original gilt frame 29 1/2''h. 35 1/2''w. Hopkins and Noah North 1988 Joy-Dyer Cornelia C. Some Records of the Dyer Family 1884 Williams Byron History of Clermont and Brown Counties Ohio 1913. Note: First editions. A very attractive set of the complete account of Nicolas Baudin's expedition to Australia with the first detailed and complete map of the Australian continent. Sent by the French government in 1800, with orders to complete the survey of the coasts of Australia, Baudin employed Péron as a naturalist and Freycinet as cartographer.
The expedition reached Van Dieman's Land in 1802 which they surveyed before sailing for Sydney where they spent six months. The expedition then surveyed the entire southern coast of Australia before returning to Mauritius where Baudin died in late 1803. As Péron died before publication was complete the work was finished by Freycinet.

Very faint signature and date lower right appears to read "...Memin 1819" (?). Housed and matted under glass in a molded giltwood frame. Sight: (Oval) 6 3/8" H x 5 1/4" W. Framed: 14 7/8" H x 13 1/4" W. Biography: "Charles Balthazar Julien Fevret de Saint-Memin was a member of the French hereditary nobility, and came to New York City in 1793, at the age of twenty-three as a former military officer exiled by the events of the French Revolution. In New York, Saint-Memin turned to the arts to support himself, his parents, and his sister. With some training in drawing and an aptitude for precision, he taught himself the art of engraving. First, he made a few landscapes and city plans, and then, in 1796 he took up the profession of portraitist. In 1798 he moved the portrait business to Philadelphia and his parents and sister settled in nearby Burlington, New Jersey. In Philadelphia, and later in Washington D. C., Saint-Memin's sitters included senators, congressman, and cabinet members in the federal government. He also attracted local merchants and landowners, French emigres like himself, and members of the United States Army, Navy, and Marines. From 1803 until 1809, Saint-Memin traveled south. His visit to Richmond in 1807-1808 was particularly successful. He made more than 120 portraits in less than a year, a record number for him. His arrival in the summer of 1807 was undoubtedly timed to coincide with the trial of Aaron Burr for treason, which began on August 3; Burr was acquitted in September. During this period, the population of the city almost doubled with witnesses, Burr partisans, and curious spectators. Many of them commissioned the artist to make their portraits, including John Marshall, the presiding judge at the trial. St. Memin and his family returned permanently to France in 1814, after the overthrow of Napoleon and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. Several large sets of his engravings were later compiled from hundreds of duplicates that the artist owned. The two largest sets-at the National Portrait Gallery and the Corcoran Gallery of Art-have inscriptions that provide the identifications for many of the portraits. Within the restricted format of the profile portrait, Saint-Memin's drawings and engravings offer an immediacy and realism that is, simultaneously, a stylized and a literal account of many of the residents of Federal America." - Edited essay from The National Portrait Gallery, Ellen G.
