Sicard mark, of tapering spill bottle form, the neck applied with a large cicada, above a painted tree and fence, on a graduated yellow-orange amber ground; the second, Zanesville, OH, 1927-1936, incised Weller and impressed black uppercase marks, cylindrical, swirl glazed in cream and two-tone mocha brown; the third, Zanesville, OH, circa 1930-1940, incised script mark and painted A., modeled on all fours, with head raised and red tongue lolling over his muzzle, h: 8.75 in. (the vase) (3) Provenance: Estate of Ronald Sperling Literature: In addition to the dog planter, this line included novelty figural soap dishes and ashtrays. For another example, see Warman's, Weller Pottery, p. 195 Vallauris is a Mediterranean town in Provence, France, which is well known for majolica style pottery. The use of a cicada as an emblem of Provence was popularized in 1895 by Louis and Francois Sicard. The design was in vogue until the 1930s and then fell out of favor when first Louis and then Francois died. The style revived in popularity in the 1950's when amongst other makers Jacques Sicard made items in this style.
