AFTER ABRAHAM JANSSENS(Flemish, 1575-1632)
The Lamentation of Christ, unsigned, after the original held by the Dayton Institute of Art, Dayton Ohio, possibly 17th century, oil on canvas, 30-1/2 x 39-7/8 in.; fine 17th century Spanish plate frame, acanthus corner and central decoration, 40-3/4 x 50-1/4 x 1-1/2 in.
Provenance: Collection of Leonard and Evelyn Meierkord, Thomasville, Georgia; by descent in family
Note: The Spanish frame married with the composition by Antwerp artist, Abraham Janssens, references the period of the Counter Reformation Church in the Spanish Netherlands post dating the 80 Years War. Over the course of the 17th century, the Habsburg ruled Spanish Netherlands, which included Antwerp, suffered from their geopolitical position as they lost much of the Protestant population which included craftsmen and artists to Amsterdam. Thus, it languished in the shadows of the Dutch Golden Age.
