ID'D CONFEDERATE COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVER. .44 caliber six-shot cylinder with engraved naval scene 7 1/2'' round barrel walnut grips. S/n 141907. Accompanied by original leather flap holster with old typed label identifying the original as Colonel Tim Reeves [sic]. In peacetime a Baptist preacher Timothy Reves served as a captain in the 15th Missouri Cavalry later as its colonel and was thus assigned to McCray's Brigade Fagan's Division Army of Missouri under Major General Sterling Price. Reves spent much of his time as a bushwhacker in Arkansas and Missouri. On Christmas Day of 1863 Union Major James Wilson attacked Reves' holiday camp meeting at Doniphan Missouri killing or capturing over one hundred-fifty soldiers and sixty civilians. This action outraged the local southern sympathizers and swelled Reves' ranks with new recruits. The following September at the Battle of Pilot Knob Major Wilson was captured. Reves then took him and six of his men to a clearing and shot them leaving the bodies for the Union Army to find days later. This killing resulted in the Union retaliatory killing of Major Enoch Wolf of the Confederate Arkansas Cavalry under the orders of Union General William Rosecrans. After the close of the war when Confederate troops were given a general amnesty Colonel Timothy Reves refused parole. He returned to Ripley County and his life as a preacher until his death in 1885. See Lowry Confederate Heroines: 120 Southern Women Convicted by Union Military Justice pp. 7-12. Additional information included with this lot. Mottled patina with minor pitting and a few light spots of corrosion and a few small traces of bluing original finish on grips with ''A'' scratched in the underside wear to the bore action is reasonably smooth. Manufactured 1863. Seems to be mechanically sound.

*HISTORIC REMINGTON MODEL 8 RIFLE USED TO KILL BONNIE & CLYDE. Cal. 35 Rem. SN 48990. Standard rifle with 22" shrouded bbl, silver bead front sight & semi-buckhorn rear sight. Mounted with nicely figured American walnut with uncheckered semi-schnable tipped forearm & semi-pistol grip stock with serrated steel buttplate. This is the actual rifle used by Bienville Parish, Louisiana Deputy Sheriff Prentis Oakley to kill Clyde Barrow & possibly Bonnie Parker also. On morning of May 23, 1934, Bonnie & Clyde were traveling down Ringgold Road in the Parish, allegedly headed for Arcadia, Louisiana to rob the bank there. Bienville Parish Sheriff Henderson Jordan had received a tip of the pair's planned activities & had contacted Capt. Frank Hamer & Manny Gault from Texas who had warrants for their arrests for murder. Both these men traveled to Bienville Parish & brought along Deputies Bob Alcorn & Ted Hinton of the Dallas County (TX) Sheriff's Dept. to participate in the arrests. Sheriff Henderson & Deputy Oakley wanted to try to capture the pair but the Texas law enforcement people dissuaded them, stating that Clyde would never surrender. They set up an ambush on the Ringgold Road where they waited continuously for a day & a half until about mid-morning on the 23rd when one of the Texas Deputies spotted the gray Ford that the pair had stolen several days before up in Kansas. He notified the other posse members who were concealed near a truck they had commandeered to partially block the road. When Bonnie & Clyde stopped to ask if they could help the truck driver the posse opened fire & killed them instantly. Bienville Parish Deputy Oakley inadvertently fired before the signal stating that he had a bead on Clyde's head & fired the first two rounds before the rest of posse opened up. It is well documented that Clyde was shot in left side of the head, as was Bonnie. It is almost certain that Deputy Oakley killed Clyde & may have also killed Bonnie. Deputy Oakley was using this rifle that he had borrowed from his friend, a local doctor by the name of Shehee. Oakley had apparently previously borrowed this rifle for hunting in previous years & when he was notified he was to participate in the posse, not having a high powered rifle of his own, he borrowed this one from Dr. Shehee. This rifle remained in the Sheriff's vault for many years afterward, apparently being taken out o occasionally for display & hunting. It was purchased by the consignor in late 1960's. Accompanied by several 1960's pulp renditions of the story of Bonnie & Clyde, copies of numerous newspaper articles of their deaths, a paperback book, Bonnie and Clyde a Twenty-First-Century Update, Knight & Davis, published in 2003, a 33 rpm record titled, The Truth About Bonnie & Clyde, a hardback book, On the Trail of Bonnie & Clyde Then and Now, Ramsey, published in 2003. Also accompanied by a copy of a notarized statement by Reves Jordan, brother of Sheriff Jordan, telling of Deputy Oakley borrowing the rifle from Dr. Shehee; a notarized letter also from Reves Jordan identifying this rifle, by model & serial number, as the one owned by Dr. Shehee & used by Deputy Oakley when Bonnie & Clyde were killed. There is another identical statement by someone named Williams, who was the brother-in-law of Dr. Shehee. The evidence affirms that this is the exact rifle which Deputy Oakley used during the ambush of Bonnie & Clyde & almost assuredly is the rifle that killed Clyde Barrow & probably killed Bonnie Parker. This rifle has been displayed a number of times but most importantly was part of the Remington exhibit at The Cody Firearms Museum in 1997 & is pictured on p. 278 in the book, The Guns of Remington, Madaus. Two pieces of museum label copy for this rifle are also included. JUST DISCOVERED: This lot also incl. an affidavit by Reves Jordan, brother of Sheriff Henderson Jordan, who was in charge of the ambush. Jordan states that this is the gun that was used by Prentis Oakley in the shootout. This notarized document was executed Sept. 21, 1980. Another notarized document, executed Dec. 18, 1967, is signed by HN Davis, Sheriff of Bienville Parish following the retirement of Prentis Oakley, attesting that this is the gun by which they were killed. CONDITION: Good. Very little orig finish remains, only in sheltered areas with most of surfaces being a blue/gray patina. Stock has numerous light nicks & scratches & a crack in wrist and retains a hand rubbed patina. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-57943 (50,000-150,000)

JOHNNY GOTTHARD FRIEDLAENDER, FRANCE, POLAND (1912 - 1992), GREEN ARABESQUE, AQUATINT, 1968, 9"H X 7 1/2"W (SIGHT), 19 1/4"H X 16"W (FRAME)Johnny Gotthard Friedlaender, France, Poland, (1912 - 1992) Green Arabesque, aquatint, 1968 pencil signed and numbered 43/100. Biography from RoGallery Johnny Friedlaender was a leading 20th century artist, whose works have been exhibited in Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Japan and the United States. He has been influential upon other notable artists, who were students in his Paris gallery. His preferred medium of aquatint etching is a technically difficult artistic process, of which Friedlaender has been a pioneer. Johnny Gotthard Friedlaender was born in Pless (Silesia) and his early studies were in Breslau under Otto Mueller. In 1936 Friedlaender journeyed to Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, France and Belgium. At the Hague he held a successful exhibition of etchings and watercolours. He fled to Paris in 1937 as a political refugee of the Nazi regime with his young wife, who was an actress. In that year he held an exhibition of his etchings which included the works: L 'Equipe and Matieres et Formes. From 1939 to 1943 he was interned in a series of concentration camps, but survived against poor odds. After freedom in 1944 Friedlaender began a series of twelve etchings entitled Images du Malheur with Sagile as his publisher. In the same year he received a commission to illustrate four books by Freres Tharaud of the French Academy. In 1945 he performed work for several newspapers including Cavalcade and Carrefour. In the year 1947, he produced the work Reves Cosmiques, and in that same year he became a member of the Salon de Mai, which position he held until 1969. In the year 1948 he began a friendship with the painter Nicolas de Stael and held his first exhibition in Copenhagen at Galerie Birch. The following year he showed for the first time in Galerie La Hune in Paris. After living in Paris for 13 years, Friedlaender became a French citizen in 1950. Friedlaender expanded his geographic scope in 1951, and exhibited in Tokyo in a modern art show. In the same year he was a participant in the XI Trienale in Milan, Italy. By 1953 he had produced works for a one-man show at the Museum of Neuchâtel and exhibited at the Galerie Moers in Amsterdam, the II Camino Gallery in Rome, in São Paulo, Brazil and in Paris. He was a participant of the French Italian Art Conference in Turin, Italy that same year. Friedlaender accepted an international art award in 1957, becoming the recipient of the Biennial Kakamura Prize in Tokyo. In 1959 he received a teaching post awarded by UNESCO at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. By 1968, Friedlaender was travelling to Puerto Rico, New York and Washington, D.C. to hold exhibitions. That year he also purchased a home in the Burgundy region of France. 1971 was another year of diverse international travel including shows in Bern, Milan, Paris, Krefeld and again New York. In the latter city he exhibited paintings at the Far Gallery, a venue becoming well known for its patronage of important twentieth century artists. From his atelier in Paris Friedlaender instructed younger artists who themselves went on to become noteworthy, among them Arthur Luiz Piza, Brigitte Coudrain, Rene Carcan, and Graciela Rodo Boulanger. Like Friedlaender, these students were expert in the lithographic* and etching arts. 1978 brought a retrospective of Friedlaender's works at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He was awarded the Lovis Corinth Prize in Regensburg three years later. On his 75th birthday, Friedlaender was given a retrospective in the Bremen Art Museum. On his 80th birthday he held a retrospective exhibition in Bonn at the municipal council offices. Friedlaender died in Paris at the age of 89. aquatint, 1968 Dimensions: 9"H x 7 1/2"W (sight), 19 1/4"H x 16"W (frame)
