1956 Matchless G-80CSFrame no. 7289CEngine no. 56/98026/8 CS
Originating in 1902, the Matchless Motorcycle Company, Plumstead, Woolwich, had a long racing history beginning in 1907, when Charlie Collier, one of the founder’s sons, became the winner of the first Isle of Man TT in 1907, in the single cylinder class. During its life, Matchless motorcycles were truly 'Matchless in Name and Reputation' producing many unique models such as the V-4 Silver Hawk, and great racing machines such as the G-45, G-50, and AJS 7-R and Porcupine, having taken over AJS in the 30’s. Charlie Collier headed up the company, and was still in charge when he passed away, just two years before this bike was built.
This G-80CS single carries on the tradition close to the end of production at the original Plumstead works. Developed from the workhorse 350 cc G-3, which was also the favorite mount of British dispatch riders during the war, the 500 cc G-80 was developed into a very competitive machine in British scrambles, which evolved into today’s popular motocross racing.
The G-80 CS (competition sports) was the last and best of the breed. By 1956, the engine now had an alloy cylinder and head. The CS was equipped with lights for use on the road, but these could be easily removed for racing on weekends.
This G80CS was restored by Bud Ekins, well known American motocross racer who held world titles in the ‘50’s, and raced with Steve McQueen. Bud was sponsored by Matchless, retaining many racing spares at his shop in North Hollywood. He prepared his own machines while he was racing competitively.
This Matchless is a correct machine, and is fitted with correct rare parts, such as the proper Lucas rubber battery, jam-pot shocks, alloy gas tank and fenders, off road removable headlight and tail light, off road forks and gearing, Lucas competition magneto, foot-pegs, etc. It is fitted with a period Amal ‘mono-block’ carburetor which affords much easier starting than the GP fitted to earlier models.
The CS was developed by Matchless with input by Bud Ekins, and was primarily aimed at desert racing in North America., and was well suited to US flat track racing also.
The Achille’s heel of the Matchless bikes of this period was the distinctive ‘jam pot’ rear suspension units which they insisted on fitting, rather than the lighter and better Girling units fitted by their British competitors. As many were replaced with Girlings, original jam-pots are now very desirable, and modern materials make them quite usable.
The G80CS featured in this sale was restored by Bud Ekins in the mid 80s, and has only been ridden 3 mile since. It comes with a signed certificate of authenticity signed by the restorer, Bud Ekins. It is ready to ride, or show.
