12th C. Persian Nishapur Glazed Pottery Oil Lamp: Near East, Persia (Iran), Nishapur area, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A pottery oil lamp of the distinctive Nishapur type that is glazed in a beautiful pale turquoise hue. A petite, rounded strap handle projects from one side and an elongated spout gently rises out of the other. The body of this lamp is made of finely ground quartz mixed with clay. The glaze is alkaline, with a copper base to give it its color and vibrancy. Such pieces were perhaps inspired by the blue and white glazed pottery that travelled the Silk Road from Tang Dynasty China, but the end result is clearly not a mere derivative but an entirely different innovation developed in Nishapur. Size: 7. 25" L x 2. 5" W x 4" H (18. 4 cm x 6. 4 cm x 10. 2 cm) . . Provenance: ex-private Toluca Lake, California, USA collection, ex Malter Gallery before 2010. . 18TH C. INUIT COPPER OIL LAMP & BRASS FIRE POKERNative American, Pacific Northwest, Inuit, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fine pair of hammered metal objects: a copper oil lamp known as a qulliq, and brass fire poker. Formed from a single sheet of copper, the lamp presents in the form of a shallow, ovoid-shaped bowl with a flat base and thick, gently curved walls that rise to a slightly flared rim above a low basin. Alternatively, the fire poker is made from a slender strip of brass. The fascinating tool displays a slender handle that widens to a folded tip, serving as a type of shovel head. The opposite end features a petite hook for suspension. Qulliqs were typically made from soapstone. This copper and brass pair is unusual, and the material purportedly came from a wrecked European or American whaling ship. Size (of largest): 14.75" L x 6" W x 1.5" H (37.5 cm x 15.2 cm x 3.8 cm)
Provenance: private Littleton, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in 1962; ex-Barrow, Alaska, USA collection

A cast bronze oil lamp with a trio of spouts projecting from its sides and a wide, round opening with a raised mouth at the center.
