An original antique print depicting the west view inside the Great Hall in London's Guildhall, as seen in 1842. The flat ceiling, following the Great Fire of 1666, was a distinctive feature. The entrance is seen on the left and the exit stairs are on the right. Produced ca. 1880 for an edition of Original Views of London As It Is, the 1842 lithograph series by Thomas Shotter Boys (1803-1874), English watercolor painter and lithographer who enjoyed many influential admirers, including the French King Louis-Phillippe, who sent the artist a ring. Boys published Original Views of London As It Is, drawn and lithographed by himself. Guildhall has been used as a town hall for several hundred years and is still the ceremonial and administrative center of the City of London. The term Guildhall refers both to the whole building and to its main room, a medieval great hall. The building is traditionally referred to as Guildhall, never the Guildhall.
