COPIES OF NC/TN LAND DOCUMENTS 1786-1840Group of 9 land documents concerning property in Middle Tennessee, 1790-1840. All are handwritten,"true" copies, and the names of governors appear to be signed by secretaries - including North Carolina Governors Sam Ashe, Samuel Johnston, Richard Dobbs Spaight, and Richard Caswell, and Tennessee governors Sam Houston, James K. Polk, and William Carroll. Some have additional names of witnesses or assignees. Names include James Robertson and John Tate (assignees of Peter Beeche?); Talliferro Howell; Joseph Howard; John Gray Blount and Thomas Blount; Abraham Goldsticker, Martha McRay, William and Eliza Newsom, Joseph Shaw, and Robert McConnell. All approximately 12" x 8" except for the Polk document, 16 1/2" x 13 1/2". Nine total items. CASED MEDICAL INSTRUMENTS, 19TH C.19th century American surgeon's field amputation kit in fitted, brass mounted, mahogany and satinwood veneered case with velvet lining. Contains a total of 35 medical implements including bone saw, scalpels, tourniquet, and other surgical tools, many with horn handles. Marked items are stamped "Caswell Hazard & Co. W.F. Ford NY" or Caswell Hazard & Co. / Ford" . Brass name plate atop box lid is not engraved. Some items retain previous Sotheby's auction tags. Overall size of case: 3" H x 16" W x 6" D. Circa 1870s. 2 SLAVE DOCUMENTS, NASHVILLE TN & NORTH CAROLINA2 Slavery related items pertaining to Charles Ordway, Hardee Murfree, and Gen. Thomas Eaton of Tennessee and North Carolina. 1st item: Handwritten one-page inventory listing the names and ages of slaves belonging to Charles Ordway of Nashville plus those of the slaves brought to his marriage by his wife Mary Crockett Bramlett. Dated February 1862. The list includes the first names of ninety-one men, women, and children with their numerical ages, the youngest recorded as "Sallie Anne 0" and the oldest recorded as "Joe 71", with a line of text reading "Negros taxable from 12 to 15-15 to 30-30 to 40-40 to 50" along the lower right margin. Additional ink and pencil inscriptions, en verso. 2nd item: 1873 copy of an 1807 handwritten three-and-one-half page bifolium slave deed from General Thomas Eaton of Warren County NC (c. 1739-1809), to his granddaughter Frances Bland Dudley and his friend Colonel Hardee Murfree, both of Williamson County, Tennessee. Eaton was a military officer in the North Carolina militia during the War of the Regulation in 1771 and the American Revolutionary War from 1775 to 1784. Colonel Hardee Murfree (1752-1809), was a lieutenant colonel from North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War, and an early settler of Middle Tennessee. The deed grants four slaves by the names of Jeffrey, Ephraim, Lisbon, and Chance to Dudley and Murfree. Includes two envelopes, not postmarked. Note: In addition to Eaton's military service, he was a member of the North Carolina Provincial Congress and North Carolina House of Commons for several terms simultaneously with his military service. Eaton was a member of the North Carolina Council of State under Governor Richard Caswell. At the time of the 1790 census, Eaton was one of the largest slaveholders in North Carolina. A miniature portrait of him is also being sold in this auction.

All items in overall good, legible condition with toning/acid burn, tears, areas of loss, foxing spots, dampstaining, to be expected from age and manner of use. 1st item: Areas of loss, largest 3 1/4" x 3/4" with one area obscuring the age of one individual, center right.

PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF GENERAL THOMAS EATON OF NC, 1739-...Miniature watercolor portrait depicting Revolutionary War General Thomas Eaton of North Carolina (c. 1739-1809), depicted in late middle age, balding, with blue eyes and wearing a dark blue coat with gold buttons and a white shirt. Housed under glass in a copper frame with flat loop hanger and ball finial; retains its original oval red leather case with remnants of silk lining. Interior of case is inscribed "Gen. Eaton Continental Army NC." Framed: 2 1/2" H x 2" W. Note: Thomas Eaton served in the North Carolina Militia during the War of the Regulation in 1771 and in the Revolutionary War from 1775 to 1784, leading troops in the battles of Brier Creek and Guilford Courthouse. He was also a member of the NC Provincial Congress and the NC House of Commons, and the NC Council of State under Gov. Richard Caswell (ref. William S. Powell, The Dictionary of North Carolina Biography, p. 131). Gen. Eaton had considerable wealth and was listed in the 1790 census as one of the largest slaveholders in the state; a note found with the portrait states that he equipped a regiment at his own expense. Eaton's first wife, Anna Bland, bore him a daughter also named Anna, who married Guilford Dudley, originally of Halifax County, VA. Guilford and Anna Dudley resided in Williamson County, Tennessee and the portrait descended in their family to Mary Bright Wilson. Additional note: the next portrait in this auction is believed to depict Gen. Eaton's daughter Harriet.

Condition:
Two 1/4" areas of exfoliation to lower edge of portrait, on subject's coat; a few other scattered tiny spots of exfoliation; otherwise good condition. Not examined out of frame. Oxidation to frame. Case shows significant wear. Interior has old glue residue and losses to silk lining.
