- PREHISTORIC ANASAZI BLACK-ON-WHITE POTTERY
PREHISTORIC ANASAZI BLACK-ON-WHITE POTTERY LADLENative American, Southwestern United States, Four Corners Region, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), ca. 1150 to 1300 CE. A pottery ladle painted with the classic black-on-white geometric motifs along the handle and hemispherical bowl. The tubular handle has an opening at the end and pierced sides for a cord to hang hung on a wall when not in use or strapped to one's side for easy travel - although such an ornate and large utensil might have been deposited with a deceased member of the community, or left behind in a domestic space. Though they appear nonobjective, these designs typically held deep meanings to their makers and would convey messages and stories regarding family, alliances, the landscape, and weather. - HUGE ANASAZI MESA VERDE BLACK-ON-WHITE
HUGE ANASAZI MESA VERDE BLACK-ON-WHITE OLLANative American, Southwestern United States, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Mesa Verde type, ca. 1200 to 1350 CE. A sizable olla of carinated form shaped from pottery via the coil-and-scrape technique. The vessel exhibits a round but stable form with a sloping shoulder and a squat neck, and across the white surfaces are black linear bands that form intriguing zigzagging, circular, spiraling, and triangular forms. Vessels from this tradition were made from a gray or white clay with angular fragments of temper and this one has a pearly gray-white slip that was then overpainted with a black pigment made from carbon. Largely, these were made by women who lived in cliff dwellings like those seen at Mesa Verde National Park. Size: 15" Diameter x 16" H (38.1 cm x 40.6 cm)
