DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (NEW
DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (NEW YORK/CANADA, 1838-1900), PAIR OF LANDSCAPES, OILS ON CANVAS, 8.25" X 16.25". FRAMED 15" X 23.5".DANIEL CHARLES GROSE, New York/Canada, 1838-1900, Pair of landscapes, one depicting camping by a riverside and the other a bridge. Dimensions: Oils on canvas, 8.25" x 16.25". Framed 15" x 23.5". Provenance: Notes:Daniel Charles Grose was a prolific painter of the Hudson River School, active between 1865 and 1900. While the names of his parents are unknown, several sources indicate his uncle was English antiquary Francis Grose. This assertion, however, appears to be based on some confusion over Francis Grose's nephew Daniel Grose (1766–1838), who authored The Antiquities of Ireland: A Supplement to Francis Grose,. It is possible that Daniel Charles is related to this family, but at the moment, no documentary evidence exists.Very little is known of Grose's early years. He may have migrated to Canada or directly to the United States, though the proliferation of his early work in Canadian museums and galleries suggests the former. Most advertisements of his work call him an American or Canadian artist. The earliest known Grose works are dated 1865 and consist of a series of landscapes in the province of Quebec. Most of his exeunt work depicts pastoral landscapes or romantic scenes with ruins and indicates an affinity to the second generation of the Hudson River School, circa 1848–1900; The Samuel Dorksy Museum of Art lists two of his works as examples of the Hudson River School. In 1881 Grose married Estelle Harriet Smith (1863–1914), who was also an artist. The two took a trip around the world between 1881 and 1884.Grose was a member of and exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association.

ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT
ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT (1819-1905)Quail and Chicks, 1867
signed and dated "AF Tait N A 1867" lower right
oil on board, 10 by 14 in.
signed and dated on back
Kennedy & Co., New York and Winsor & Newton labels on back
This painting is number 67.5 in Henry Marsh's Tait checklist. This little gem recalls Tait's famous "The Cares of a Family," with a pair of attentive quail and six baby chicks framed by delicate grasses and flowers.
Known as one of America’s earliest sporting artists, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait was born in Liverpool, England, in 1819. From an early age, he was interested in both art and the outdoors. Tait worked for the firm of Thomas Agnew, a famous art dealer and lithographer in Manchester, trained in lithography and drawing, and explored the open land around the city. However, many of the most beautiful vistas and hunting grounds were private and off limits. While working for the art firm, Tait was exposed to the works of Edwin Landseer (1802-1873), Richard Ansdell (1818-1885), and John Frederick Herring (1815-1907), among others.
In Liverpool, beginning in 1843, Tait spent time with fellow artist George Catlin (1796-1872), which may have whetted the young artist’s appetite to explore life in America. Catlin, who was twenty-three years older than Tait, had spent much of the previous decade living in the American West chronicling the lives of Native Americans through his careful drawings and sketches of their clothing, weapons, and ceremonies. There is little doubt that Catlin's stories would have captivated the young and talented Tait.
In 1850 Tait boarded a boat with his wife and came to America. By 1852 Tait was pursuing his interests in wildlife and hunting, based on the subject matter of his works. He worked from a studio in New York City, but spent a great deal of time on Long Lake in the Adirondacks, where he acquired skills as an angler, hunter, and keen observer of wildlife. These skills were as important for Tait’s art as his fine ability with brush and pigment, since they gave an authenticity to his portrayals of outdoor life which was virtually unrivaled at the time. His relative freedom to paint wherever he wanted in the vast public lands of New York was obviously liberating to the artist, who had felt confined by the strict laws governing trespassing and hunting on private property in England.
With this liberation and experience of the outdoors, Tait’s artistic career flourished. In 1852, only two years after Tait arrived in New York, Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824-1895) purchased the first of many works from the budding artist. In that same year, Tait was asked to hang a half-dozen works at the National Academy of Design’s annual exhibition. By 1854 he had achieved an associate membership and four years later he became a full member. Editions of Tait’s works for Currier and Ives were reproduced by the thousands and formed some of America’s most iconic images of the Victorian era. The exceptionally popular "American Field Sports" series showcased Tait’s abilities as an upland bird and dog painter and included the four lithographs "A Chance for Both Barrels," "Flushed," "On a Point," and "Retrieving." These hunting scenes, along with his camping and woodland scenes, resonated with the public as an integral part of the American experience and continue to inform us of our history as a nation. Seminal works by Tait, such as "An Anxious Moment," "A Tight Fix," and "Trappers at Fault: Looking for the Trail," have become embedded as part of our heritage and serve as signposts along our path as a nation.
Today, Tait's wilderness, frontier, and wildlife scenes hang in some of the most prominent museums and private collections, including the permanent collections of the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts; the Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake, New York; the American Museum of Western Art, Denver, Colorado; the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; the Denver Art Museum, Colorado; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Museum of Racing, Saratoga Springs, New York; the Shelburne Museum, Vermont; the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; the Tate Gallery, London; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, among others.

ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT (1819-1905)On the Qui Vive!, 1871
signed and dated "A.F. Tait N.Y. 1871" lower right
oil on panel, 12 by 16 in.
numbered, titled, signed, and inscribed on back
"On the Qui Vive" is old slang for "on the alert," another common title for Tait's deer paintings. Depicting four deer with flying mallards behind on the shore of Racquette Lake in the Adirondacks, this bright and lively jewel of a painting reveals the artist at the peak of his painting abilities.
This important work is titled and described in Tait's 1871 register entry as No. 19. It is illustrated in Cadbury and Marsh's text on the artist: "[No.] 19. Deer. on the qui vive! Buck & 3 Does. 16 x 12. Mr. Dorman, 109 E 27th St. Del'd to him March 17th & paid same time [$125.00] in his own frame by [blank]."

"CAMPBELL'S YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL
"CAMPBELL'S YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK GUIDE" 1913For your consideration is this 1913 "Campbell's Yellowstone National Park Guide", by Reau Campbell, H.E. Klamer publisher Chicago. This is a scarcely seen guide for Yellowstone that includes many illustrations, maps, and photos. The book is complete and comes with the original fold out map still attached inside the back cover. Early twentieth century travel guide to Yellowstone for the prospective tourist that contains much detailed information, and is illustrated throughout with black and white views. Many interesting views of the park and its attractions and also views of stagecoaches, hotels, camping sites, Billie Hofer's boats, Old Faithful Inn, and much more. "Perhaps the word 'Descriptive' in the caption of this book is a misnomer, for who shall describe the wonders of a geyser like Old Faithful, or paint the beauties of the Grand Canon? Talmage with all the eloquence of his soul acknowledged the hopelessness of the task, and Moran put down his brush in despair. This Guide book is the easier task, and of more importance. What I have written here is after the experiences of more than a score of journeys through the Park, journeys not of the five-day sort, but with leisurely travel and long stops that I might see some of the greater glories that are not on the beaten track. And I have not been disappointed." -page.5 of the text. Campbell was noted for writing travel guides of Mexico, Florida, Cuba and Yellowstone National Park during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Original fold out map attached to the inside back cover. This Yellowstone guide is in good overall condition, illustrated cover exhibits scuffing. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing. No other obvious marring noted. Measures 5.5"W x 7"L

BRIAN SANDERS (B. 1937) "GIRLS'
BRIAN SANDERS (B. 1937) "GIRLS' BRIGADE" ORIGINALBrian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Girls' Brigade" Original Watercolor painting on Paper.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This artwork originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain Girls' Brigade stamp issued March 24, 1982.
As early as 1928, three of the United Kingdom's most prestigious girls' organizations, the Girls' Brigade, the Girls' Guildry, and the Girls' Life Brigade began talks aimed at consolidating all three groups into one youth service both international and interdenominational in scope. Finally, after thirty-six years of negotiations, a united body consisting of these groups was formed. On June 25, 1964, the Girls' Brigade, boasting a combined new membership of over 165,000 girls of all ages was created. The Girls' Brigade, a Christian organization, is designed to help girls attain physical, mental and spiritual maturity, and to encourage girls to express what they learn through practical service to home, community and church. Through the Girls' Brigade, a "Brigader" is given the opportunity to meet friends, to work and play together under trained leaders, to learn new skills, and to take part in exciting new activities such as camping holidays and service to the community. Moreover, for its leaders, the Girls' Brigade offers a wonderful opportunity of service to Christian women who are already a vital part of their local church, and who have a love for young people. As prescribed by the Brigade's constitution, the local church chooses and appoints each Girls' Brigade leader, and training and assistance is provided by the Brigade itself.

BRIAN SANDERS (B. 1937) "BOYS'
BRIAN SANDERS (B. 1937) "BOYS' BRIGADE" ORIGINALBrian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Boys' Brigade" Watercolor on Paper.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This artwork originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain Boys Brigade stamp issued March 24, 1982. In October 1883 William Alexander Smith laid the foundation for what is now the oldest uniformed voluntary boys' organization in the world ... the Boys' Brigade. From the outset, the Boys' Brigade was a church based organization. Its aim was to take thousands of unsupervised boys off the street corners of Glasgow and help them become followers of the Christian faith through self-control, reverence and a sense of responsibility. This new idea soon became the forerunner of all the uniformed youth organizations to follow. When the success of the first Brigade Company was evident other churches in Glasgow quickly took up the idea, and thereafter the organization spread rapidly among all denominations. In November 1885 the Boys' Brigade spread to London where the first British Companies were started, followed soon by Companies in Wales and Ireland. By 1893 the total membership of the Boys' Brigade had surpassed twenty-six thousand boys. One of the greatest innovations of the Boys' Brigade is camping. Very few boys or families had enjoyed the delights of camping outdoors until the Brigade began the tradition in 1886. From the first Brigade Company of fifty boys long ago in 1883, the Boys' Brigade has grown to include a total membership of 184,000 in the United Kingdom and over 400,000 in other countries.

THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975)
THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) PENCIL SIGNED LITHOGRAPHThomas Hart Benton (1889-1975)Down the River (1939)The lithograph circulated by Associated American Artists in an edition of 250 prints is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and listed as Fath catalog number 33. A dark impression.Benton's comments in Fath read:A scene on the White River in The Ozarks. Drawings for it were made in August 1939 while on a float trip down the river. The area presented is now under seventy five feat of water, due to the construction of Bull Shoals dam. However, such scenes are still common in the clear water Ozark rivers which remain free flowing. Twice yearly, Spring and Autumn, I have floated those rivers from many years, fishing, camping out on the sand and gravel bars and just watching the river banks go by. The boy in the picture is my son T.P. Benton. Also called 'The Young Fisherman.'Image measures 12.25 x 9.75 with a framed size of 21.25 x 18.25 inches.Very good to fine condition, the full untrimmed sheet, not laid down, no damage, stain, punctures, tears or repair; framed to archival standards in acid free mounts.

GARY LOVE, AMERICAN (20TH / 2ST
GARY LOVE, AMERICAN (20TH / 2ST CENTURY), LANDSCAPE WITH MOUNTAIN, COLOR PHOTOGRAPH, 11" X 14", 17" X 21" (FRAME)Gary Love, American, (20th / 2st Century) landscape with mountain, color photograph signed lower right. From Artists Website: Gary Love's Passion for landscape photography began on a camping trip when he was a teenager. Taking photographs became a way to share his adventures and love of nature with friends and family. Gary has been taking photographs for over 25 years, but in 2003 after selling his landscape design company he became a full-time professional photographer. "I think having a landscape design company has really given me an edge as a photographer. I was at a young age able to create a layout for a property that achieved a balance and harmony that I also strive for in the composition of my images." Gary breaks many traditional photography rules because he has no formal training; however, this is something he feels is to his benefit. "I gained what knowledge I could from the books I read, but quickly realized I learned much more by keeping a log of each photo taken, then reviewing those notes while looking at each piece of film. I believe that in landscape photography each person needs to see and experience nature's ever-changing beauty in their own way." Love spends months on the back-roads of America armed with just his cameras and camping gear. "I usually remain at a location for a great deal of time before picking up my camera, exploring and getting a sense of my surroundings." In early 2005 Gary embarked on a full time exploration of first, the U.S., then the world, in an attempt to capture the once in a lifetime moments that have become an essential element to the images he is most noted for in the art world. His images have been featured in several publications; his work is collected by various corporations as well as individual collectors all over the world, and is available in numerous fine art galleries. His patience and dedication to his craft pays off. color photograph Dimensions: 11" x 14", 17" x 21" (frame)
