IAN MCKEEVER, (UNITED KINGDOM, B.1946), SENTINEL V, 2003, ACRYLIC AND OIL ON CANVAS, 88 1/2"H X 55 1/2"W.IanMcKeever(United Kingdom, b.1946)Sentinel V, 2003acrylic and oil on canvasSigned, titled and dated verso. Provenance: Property of the Estate of Craig W Johnson, purchased from the Alan Cristea Gallery, London. Biography from the artist's website: Ian McKeever, born 1946, Withernsea, Yorkshire commenced working as an artist in 1969 after studying English Literature. His first solo exhibition took place at the ICA, London in 1973. His early work as a painter grew out of a conceptual interest in landscape, painting and photography in which often a photographic element was juxtaposed with a drawing or overpainted. However, around 1988 the work became significantly more engaged with painting per se. These later works have an emphasis on an abstract language which is concerned primarily with the human body and architectural structures. At the same time the quality of light and its presence in the painting became increasingly important. Often the works are monumental in format. Since 2007 he has reengaged with the photographic element in his work. McKeever has received numerous awards including the prestigious DAAD scholarship in Berlin 1989/ 90 and was elected a Royal Academician in 2003. He has held several teaching positions including Guest Professor at the Städel Akademie der Kunst in Frankfurt, Senior Lecturer, Slade, University of London and Visiting Professor at the University of Brighton. He has also published many texts and essays primarily concerning the nature of painting. Amongst his many museums exhibitions McKeever participated in Dialogue, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, 1985, New Abstraction, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte, Reina Sofia, Madrid and Museo d'Art Contemporarie, Barcelona, 1996, Royal Academicians in China, National Gallery, Beijing, Shanghai Art Museum and Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2005, Tate Britain, 2011 and National Museum of Norway, 2012. McKeever has had numerous solo exhibitions, including Kunstverein Braunschweig, 1987, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 1990, Kunsthallen Brandts, Odense, 2001, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2010, Sønderjylland Kunstmuseum, 2011, Josef Albers Museum, Bottrop, 2012 and Kunst-Station Sankt Peter, Cologne, 2014. McKeever's work is represented in leading international public Collections, including Tate, British Museum, Royal Academy of Arts, London; Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna; Museum of Fine Art, Budapest; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk; Glyptotek, Copenhagen; Museum of Contemporay Art, Helsinki; Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Boston Museum of Fine Art and Yale Center for British Art, Connecticut.88 1/2"H x 55 1/2"W.

JULIAN OPIE, (BRITISH, B.1958), SARA GETS UNDRESSED 2, 2004, LENTICULAR ACRYLIC PANEL COMPRISED OF INKJET PRINTS, 76"H X 31 1/2"W (IMAGE), 78 1/2"H X 34"W (FRAME).Julian Opie (British, b.1958) Sara Gets Undressed 2, 2004 lenticular acrylic panel comprised of inkjet prints signed and numbered 3/25 verso. Provenance: Property of the Estate of Craig W Johnson, purchased from Alan Cristea Gallery, London. From the Archives of AskArt: Julian Opie was born in 1958 in London and raised in Oxford. He is a graduate of Goldsmiths College (1979-82) and achieved some early gallery success, which was an incentive for slightly younger artists in the same college, such as Damien Hirst to do likewise. His highly stylized work, involves the reduction of photographs (or short films) into figurative reproductions (created using computer software). In his portraiture, the human face is characterized by black outlines with flat areas of color, and minimalized detail, to the extent that an eye can become a just the black circle of the pupil, and sometimes a head is represented by a circle with a space where the neck would be. In this way, Julian Opie tries to present the complexities of the human form by reducing it to its mere basics. As a successful artist who exhibits internationally, Opie uses computers in art for other works. His famous Imagine you are… series, demonstrated how activities such as driving, walking and climbing could be represented by simple reductions. In addition, Opie uses sculpture and light installations to present items of everyday life. I am simply using that which is available to describe that which is experienced. Julian Opie's style was brought into the public eye when he was asked to design the cover for the British band, Blur's best of album. On the cover, the band members (clockwise from top left) Graham Coxon, Alex James, Dave Rowntree and Damon Albarn are transformed into Opie's style. Julian Opie, as one of the leading figures in computerized art, also implements computer technology by cutting out the outlines and colored shapes, sometimes on vinyl, as in large display banners at Tate Britain. Opie is a trustee of the Tate Gallery and exhibits with Lisson Gallery and Alan Cristea Gallery in London. His studio and workshop is based in Shoreditch, London. Recently, Julian Opie has been met with controversy due to his more daring subject matter - pole dancers. A key part of his exhibition in the Cristea Art Gallery, pole dancers are typically reduced to cartoonist figures. 76"H x 31 1/2"W (image), 78 1/2"H x 34"W (frame). lenticular acrylic panel comprised of inkjet prints Dimensions: 76"H x 31 1/2"W (image), 78 1/2"H x 34"W (frame).
SAM FRANCIS, (AMERICAN, 1923-1994), UNTITLED (JUBILEE), LITHOGRAPH, 1964, 15"H X 22 1/4"W (SHEET), 25"H X 32 1/4"W (FRAME).SamFrancis(American, 1923-1994)Untitled (Jubilee)lithograph, 1964pencil signed artist proof. Provenance: Property of the Estate of Craig W Johnson, purchased from the Alan Cristea Gallery, London. Biography from GallArt.com: Sam Francis, noted for his lyrical, colorful abstract works, was one of the first American artists to experiment with "empty-center" painting. Born in 1923 in San Mateo, California, Francis attended the University of California in Berkeley from 1941 to 1943, when he joined the Air Force. In 1945, hospitalized in San Francisco after an injury, he began painting under the influence of David Park. He had already developed an abstract style before returning to Berkeley for formal art studies in 1949 and 1950. In school, Francis developed the propensity for vivid blots of color and thinned pigments that is reflected in his mature work. In the 1950s, Francis traveled extensively, with Paris as his base. He has lived abroad so much that he is considered as much an international painter as an American one. In France, Francis produced some pale monochromatic works. His characteristic brilliant colors soon returned in overlapping and dripping profusion in the dense, unified style typical of his work up to the mid-1950s. His paintings in the 1956 "Twelve Americans" exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City gained him a worldwide reputation. Japanese influence is seen in Francis's unique early 1960s experimentation with empty-center painting. Vast canvases with unpainted central areas are defined, accented, or dominated by strokes and drips in bold colors around the extremities of the canvas. From the 1970s on, Francis returned to centered painting, in which color puddles out in a galaxy effect on monumental canvases. During the final three decades of his career his style of large scale bright Abstract expressionism was also closely associated with Color field painting. During the last year of his life, suffering from prostate cancer and unable to paint with his right hand after a fall, in a final burst of energy he used his left hand to complete a dazzling series of about 150 small paintings before he died. He was buried in Olema, in Marin County, California. 15"H x 22 1/4"W (sheet), 25"H x 32 1/4"W (frame).

JOSEF ALBERS, (GERMAN, 1888-1976), WHITE LINE SQUARE XI, (SERIES II), 1966, 3 COLOR LITHOGRAPH, 20 3/4"SQ. (SHEET), 15 3/4"SQ. (IMAGE).Josef Albers (German, 1888-1976) White Line Square XI, (Series II), 1966 3 color lithograph lower margin pencil signed, dated, and numbered WLS XI 125/125. Provenance: Property of the Estate of Craig W Johnson, purchased from the Alan Cristea Gallery, London. From the archives of AskArt: Josef Albers (1888 - 1976), was a German artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and in the United States, formed the basis of some of the most influential and far-reaching art education programs of the 20th century. Born in Bottrop, Westphalia, on March 19, 1888, Albers studied art in Berlin, Essen, and Munich before enrolling as a student at the prestigious Weimar Bauhaus in 1920. He began teaching in the Department of Design in 1923, and was promoted to Professor in 1925, the year the Bauhaus moved to Dessau. With the closure of the Bauhaus under Nazi pressure in 1933, Albers emigrated to the United States and joined the faculty of Black Mountain College, North Carolina, where he ran the painting program until 1949. From 1950 to 1958, Albers headed the Department of Design at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Accomplished as a designer, photographer, typographer, printmaker and poet, Albers is best remembered for his work as an abstract painter. He favored a very disciplined approach to composition, and published several widely-read books and articles on the theory of form and color. Most famous of all are the dozens of paintings from his series "Homage to the Square," begun in 1949, in which Albers explored chromatic variations on a theme of flat colored squares arranged concentrically on the canvas. Albers' theories on art and education were formative for the next generation of artists. His own paintings form the foundation of both hard-edge abstraction and Op art. After retiring from Yale, Albers continued to live and work in New Haven with his wife, textile artist Anni Albers, until his death on March 26, 1976. (Courtesy of BiographyBase.com) 20 3/4"sq. SAM FRANCIS, (AMERICAN, 1923-1994), HAPPY DEATH STONE, LITHOGRAPH, 1960, 24 1/4"H X 35"W (SHEET), 30"H X 40 1/2"W (FRAME).SamFrancis(American, 1923-1994)Happy Death Stonelithograph, 1960pencil signed artist proof, edition of 90. 24 1/4"H x 35"W (sheet), 30"H x 40 1/2"W (frame).

Provenance: Property of the Estate of Craig W Johnson, purchased from the Alan Cristea Gallery, London. Biography from Phillips New York One of the greatest colorists of his generation, Howard Hodgkin explores the very nature of painting as both cultured language and sheer expression. He disregards the classical polarities of abstraction and representation, past and present, canvas and frame, using gestural brushstrokes and a vivid palette to emphasize the picture plane, while simultaneously seeking to convey memories and emotions. The seemingly casual, urgent quality of his paintings and prints belies a drawn-out process of making: it could take a year for Hodgkin to prepare to execute a single brushstroke. The resultant maximalist, saturated works on canvas, paper, wood and board can be intimately scaled and jewel-like, or oversized, opulent and theatrical. Whilst his early compositions have a collaged, geometric flatness, Hodgkin's later work (including etching and aquatint prints) increasingly incorporated more lush surface textures and complex, fluid patterns reminiscent of the Paturi miniatures from India, of which he was an avid collector.62"H x 38 1/4"W, of each sheet, total of 77"W.

JOSEF ALBERS, (GERMAN, 1888-1976), WHITE LINE SQUARE XVII, 1967, 3 COLOR LITHOGRAPH, 20 3/4"SQ. (SHEET), 15 3/4"SQ. (IMAGE).Josef Albers (German, 1888-1976) White Line Square XVII, 1967 3 color lithograph lower margin pencil signed, dated, and numbered WLS XVII 10/125. The English Pintail Drake John English (1848 The English Pintail Drake
John English (1848-1915)
Florence, NJ, c. 1880
17 in. long
John English was the “the innovator of the Delaware River decoy,” yet his existence alluded collectors for years and information about his life is just now being discovered. English’s importance as the father of the Delaware River school of carving is documented by virtually every authority from the region. Robert “Bob” White, describes English as “the ultimate Delaware River carver.” Author Kenneth L. Gosner notes, “The work of John English set a standard against which other Delaware River makers have been measured and compared ever since. Indeed, for many collectors, the English style is the Delaware River style.”
The most immediate recipients of English’s technique were his sons, Dan (1883-1962) and John “Jack,” Jr. (b. 1881). They both used his patterns and carved with a measure of their father’s distinctive style. However, according to Harrison Huster and Doug Knight in “Floating Sculpture,” “John’s decoys are much lighter than those made by either of his sons. His carving is more refined and classic.”
“John English of Florence, New Jersey no doubt produced some of the finest decoys ever used on the Delaware River,” writes Delaware River historian Alan Linkchorst. He continues, “His delicate hollow lures, with their lightly raised primaries and carefully incised wing and tail carving, clearly showcase his skills as one of the most talented makers of floating sculpture. If he wasn’t the innovator of the Delaware River style of decoy, he certainly was its early champion. Yet in the early recorded annals of the history of decoys and their makers, due to the gifted brushstrokes of an avid duck hunter from nearby Trenton, his contributions were nearly overlooked.” In Linkchorst’s article on John English the author explains “one of the reasons why John English decoys were so late in being identified by collectors could be attributed to the fact that a large rig of John English decoys were acquired by John Dawson [1886-1959], a hunter from nearby Trenton, who repainted the rig in bold geometric patterns. While this unplanned collaborative effort produced a rig that is highly sought by collectors, it undoubtedly reduced the number of John English decoys in original paint.”
English was in complete command of his artistry when creating this decoy, which features a razor sharp upturned bill, subtle mandible and nostrils, and the precise raised wing-tip carving that marks the region’s style. The form and paint of this high-head pintail exhibit English’s best efforts and work in perfect harmony with one another.
English’s elegant work shows a repetition of design. His pintail hens feature a strong V-shape to the raised wing tips that are repeated in the paint pattern. Until the discovery of this bird, English’s thoroughness and intent had not been seen in a pintail drake. The S-shaped curve of the head, neck, and breast is echoed perfectly by the white, chestnut, and gray paint patterns in that area. This smooth S-shape is repeated again in the green speculums and their white and orange accents.
While there are several known John English pintails painted by John Dawson (1889-1959), this decoy remains the only pure English pintail drake to have surfaced. Several fine pintail hens have come to market, including a graceful hen that set the world record auction price for any decoy from the region, selling for close to a quarter of a million dollars.
Bob White recalls that Lloyd Johnson (1910-1965) was “the first to realize that Delaware River birds were collectible and that while Mackey, Barber, and Earnest would visit him to buy decoys, he kept the best for himself.” This pintail was one that Johnson kept.
This drake pintail sat front and center on a prominent shelf in O’Brien’s home as a bookend to the Barber-Dudley ruddy duck (see lot 34).
Along with the Phillips and Long pintail drakes by A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952), this is perhaps the most important pintail ever to come to market.
In excellent original paint with minimal gunning wear and a tight age line in sprig tip.
