300. A Magnificent Heisler-Manheim Silver Coffee Service, German, ca. Mid - Late 19th Century
This service consists of five pieces: a coffee urn (with a burner) (measures approx. 16"T), a teapot (9-1/2"T), creamer (approx. 6-1/2"), sugar bowl (approx. 6"T) and a tray (19-1/2" x 15"). Molded ram heads are the highlight of the design, as well as cross-bounded C-scroll handles with ivory insulators and acanthus leaves molded decorations. Grapevine finials grace the lids of the service. Concave top with elegant fluting and foliage is separated from a u-shaped bottom by a band with an undulating design. Bottom is decorated with foliage swags accented with ribbons and ram heads. All pieces rest on hoofed feet. Rectangular tray with rounded corners echoes the design of the service pieces and features molded ram heads with laurel swags at 90 degree intervals. The service is properly hallmarked with a German silver standard mark of 800/1000, a crescent moon, a crown, and the maker's mark of the three stars within a triangular cartouche; except for the urn which is marked with a square dotted cartouche (as seen in 15th detail photo). Court's Silversmith, Heisler-Manheim, specialized in Rococo sets. In connection with Belgian silversmith Louis Wolfers (1820-1892) and, from 1890, with his son Philippe. Each side panel depicting a mythological Greek or Roman helmeted soldier with spear and shield posed beneath a classical arch beneath a floral filled trophy urn flanked by ribbon-tied bellflowers and urns. SIZE: 42" h x 55-1/2" l x 26" d. PROVENANCE: The family of Hubert D'Autremont, who in 1793, was arrested, condemned, and put to death by the guillotine. His widow and children emigrated to America. Alexandre-Hubert D'Autremont, son of Hubert D'Autremont, married Abigail Dodge, daughter of Major Dodge. Louis D'Autremont, son of Alexandre-Hubert D'Aturemont born 20 January 1805,. Louis fathered Charles D'Autremont, born 20 March 1845. Charles emigrated to New York, where he established a family estate in Angelica, New York. At this time, and prior to the taking of the estate by the state of New York by eminent domain that the desk and Savonarola chairs arrived from France and remained there until the property was demolished. It was during this time period that the family descendants of the consignor acquired them along with other family heirlooms, including a pair of D'Autremont ancestral portraits sold by this company in the late 20th century. CONDITION: The desk in structurally good condition with untouched surface. Dark coloration and patina with multiple losses to celluloid veneers. The desk and pair of Savonarola armchairs are accompanied by a box of original inlays salvaged from these pieces, which will aid in any future restoration.
