Carmen Marc Valvo, an American of Italian/Spanish ancestry, grew up in Westchester County, New York. His parents, both of whom worked in the medical field, wanted him to pursue a career similar to theirs. However, he had other ideas and began his career in 1989 with Nina Ricci in Paris, followed by a stint at Christian Dior. In 1989 he launched his own label and devoted his career to designing glamorous attire which is sold at Neiman-Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales, New York. Edmond "Ted" Lapidus (1929-2008), was a French fashion designer and is credited with the unisex look in addition to introducing military and safari looks to haute couture. He started his own label in 1951; in the 1960's he dressed Brigitte Bardot and Alain Delon. His main claim to fame, however, is designer haute couture denim jeans.
