19th C. African Baule Wood Standing Nude Female: West Africa, Ivory Coast / Cote d' Ivoire, Baule or Akan peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A tall statue hand-carved from a singular piece of wood featuring a nude woman. The woman stands on an integral rectangular pedestal, facing forward with cupped hands resting against her wide hips. Her breasts are small in contrast to her broad shoulders. The tall neck is incised with rings and supports the oversized head. The face features a wide-eyed visage with bulging round eyes, a small nose, and an incised line for the mouth. The coiffure is delineted with small ridges in the front and wider ridges on the back of the head. The surface of the wood is covered with a thick, dark patina. A wonderful example! Early 20th C. African Dan Wood Divination Mask: West Africa, Ivory Coast / Liberia, Dan peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A remarkable hand-carved wood divination mask of intriguing form. The stylized visage presents rectangular, openwork eyes beneath a projecting brow, a broad nose that spans to the width of the face, and a huge mouth that extends forwards showing thin lips and a slender tongue. A large pair of ears flanks the fascinating countenance, each adorned by a relief cross on their outer sides, possibly representing ceremonial scarification, and 4 risen vertical bands decorate the brow. The periphery of the brow is additionally embellished by 13 risen dots. Boasting a lustrous, mocha-hued surface, the abstract vizard is adorned with red and brown pigments, as well as tan-colored desiccated earth and the periphery of the verso is lined with a series of annular drill holes, allowing the piece to be strapped to a costume. Catalog Notes: Dan artists and carvers are some of the most talented wood carvers, which can be seen in their mastery of large wooden spoons. The spoons which are used for feasts are known by many names including wake mia and wunkirmian. They range in size from roughly a foot to upwards or two feet or more and can have one or two parallel bowls. The handle of the sppon is always carved. It often relates to the human form.
