A beautiful vessel comprised of conjoined twin chambers, of globular forms with flared rims and planar bases, that are intersected with a raised strap handle. Apulian Red-Figure Trefoil Oinochoe w/ Dionysus: Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 300 BCE. A gorgeous pottery oinochoe featuring a trefoil spout, a corseted neck, and an egg-shaped body, all sitting upon an applied, discoid foot. A lovely ribbon-form handle connects the spout to the shoulder. Decorated in the red-figure technique, the body of the ancient vessel is adorned with a large panel of Dionysus (Roman Bacchus), the Greek god of wine, fertility, and religious ecstasy. The youthful deity is shown leaning to his left as he holds a circular platter in his left hand and a tambourine or wreath in his right. A flowered crown sits atop his thick head of hair, as he stands nude and holds the platter outwards, as if giving an offering of some kind. Exhibiting a lean body and muscular limbs, he looks upwards, appearing to bite his lip while smiling coyly. The figure is flanked by a pair of flowers as an additional floral motif decorates the field and a lovely border with an undulating design embellishes the neck. Size: 5" in diameter x 6. 625" H (12. 7 cm x 16. 8 cm). . The base presents a carved pottery mark in the form of a swastika - a common motif in Greek pottery - and a painted "X. " Alas, the meanings of these marks are now unknown and largely lost on the modern viewer. . . Virtually no ancient Greek paintings have survived the tests of time. This makes the painted compositions found on ceramic vessels like this example invaluable sources of information about ancient Greek visual art. Refined vases like this amphora were not merely utilitarian pottery, but rather works of art in their own right, highly prized throughout the classical world. Red figure pieces in particular allowed for the development of more naturalistic imagery than black figure examples. This innovative technique involved creating figures by outlining them in the natural red of the vase, making it possible for the painter to then enrich the figural forms with black lines to suggest volume, perspectival depth, and movement, bringing those silhouettes and their environs to life. Beyond this, fugitive pigments made it possible for the artist to create additional layers of interest and detail. . . Perhaps the most exciting innovation in Greek vase painting was the red-figure technique, invented in Athens around 525 BCE and beloved by other artists of Magna Graecia. The red-figure technique allowed for much greater flexibility as opposed to the black-figure technique, for now the artist could use a soft, pliable brush rather than a rigid metal graver to delineate interior details, play with the thickness of the lines, as well as build up or dilute glazes to create chromatic effects. The painter would create figures by outlining them in the natural red of the vase, and then enrich these figural forms with black lines to suggest volume, at times perspectival depth, and movement, bringing those silhouettes and their environs to life. Beyond this, fugitive pigments made it possible for the artist to create additional layers of interest and detail as we see on the youth's diadem in this example. . . Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Texas, USA estate, acquired in the 2000s or earlier. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. . Apulian Red Figure Lidded Lekanis, Baltimore Painter: Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, attributed to the Baltimore Painter, ca. 330 to 310 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery lidded vessel known as a lekanis that is covered in black pigment and decorated with gorgeous red-figure details. The base presents with a flared foot beneath a hemispherical body that is enveloped in lustrous black pigment and has a pair of parabolic handles protruding from the side walls. The interior of the basin has developed incredible areas of rainbow iridescence that nicely contrast against the black ground. The wide, bell-shaped lid bears a register of cresting waves along the exterior rim and a radiating flower atop the discoid handle. Two distinguished 'lady of fashion' characters adorn the top of the lid, one in profile and the other in portrait, both wearing delicate stephane brought forth in fugitive white pigment and kekryphalos hairstyles bound in the back. The grounds surrounding the women are filled with abstract foliate forms and flowers, and a grand pair of palmettes separate the two luxurious ladies. Size (w/ lid): 9. 25" W x 5. 875" H (23. 5 cm x 14. 9 cm). . According to A. D. Trendall, "The Baltimore Painter is the most important and significant of the later Apulian vase-painters and, in view of the fact that many of his vases and those of his associates come from the area around Canosa, it is likely that his workshop was located in that city. His vases have much in common with those of his Tarentine contemporary, the Underworld Painter, particularly in regard to their subject-matter, monumental dimensions, multi-figured compositions, and ornamental patterns, but they differ greatly in the drawing of the faces and in the rendering of the drapery, in both of which the Baltimore Painter is much bolder and more assertive. " (A. D. Trendall "Red Figure Vases of South Italy and Sicily" Thames and Hudson, 1989, p. 97). . Lidded lekanides were cosmetic containers, often given by fathers to brides on their wedding day. The lady of fashion motif complements this notion - often thought to represent a young woman on the day of her betrothal. . Cf. A lepaste painted by the Baltimore Painter at The British Museum, museum number 1859, 0216. 81. . This piece has been searched against the Art Loss Register database and has been cleared. The Art Loss Register maintains the world’s largest database of stolen art, collectibles, and antiques. . . Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private C. Huge Greek Terracotta Pedestal to Hold Louterion, TL'd: Greece, Classical to early Hellenistic Periods, ca. 5th to 3rd century BCE. A massive two-part terracotta pedestal, made to hold a louterion (a vessel for water, wine, or funeral rites). It is made of a pale red-pink clay, with a square bottom plinth decorated with a wave pattern on is upper edge. Resting on that is the hollow, cylindrical, vertically fluted column shaft, whose rounded base is embellished with a tongue pattern along its upper edge. The column shaft has a convex horizontal molding for a necking ring at the top, and a recessed cylindrical rim that fits inside the top section. This capping element continues the fluting from the column shaft and has a corresponding rounded echinus, also decorated with a tongue pattern. The piece terminates in another square plinth, serving as an abacus, which again features the incised tongue decoration. The entire piece is hollow, and the roughly square opening in the upper plinth would have served to hold a basin, with the louterion inside it. Size: 15. 25" L x 15. 3" W x 29. 5" H (38. 7 cm x 38. 9 cm x 74. 9 cm). . These basins were used for sponge bathing or washing and are frequently depicted atop columnar pedestals in red-figure vase paintings of the 5th and 4th centuries BCE. The pedestals usually have spreading feet and are sometimes mounted on rectangular plinths, as here, creating together with the basin a form similar to a modern bird bath. Stone louteria and stands have been found in private dwellings, as at Olynthos, and in temple areas, where many seem to have been dedications, rather than functional objects. Terracotta examples are known, for example from both a bath and sanctuary area at Corinth, and bronze was also used. Most louteria were made separately from their pedestals and were sometimes even fashioned from a different material. In Southern Italy, louteria were widely used in funerary cults as grave markers. . For similar pedestals supporting basins, compare the interior of an Etruscan kylix, published in J. Michael Padgett et al. , Vase-Painting in Italy: Red-Figure and Related Works in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Boston, 1993), cat. no. 169, pp. 251-253; a terracotta in Munich, inv. NI 6792, illustrated in Friedrich Wilhelm Hamdorf, Hauch des Prometheus (Munich, 1996), fig. 154, p. 120; a marble relief in the Vatican, illustrated in Margarete Bieber, The Sculpture of the Hellenistic Age (New York, 1961), fig. 658; and the reverse of an Etruscan mirror, ex Alfred E. Mirsky Coll. , sold at Christie's New York, 16 June 2006, lot no. 225. For a marble specimen at Olynthos, see David M. Robinson & George E. Mylonas, "The Fourth Campaign at Olynthos, " AJA 43. 1 (Jan. -Mar. 1939), pp. 48-77, at pp. 60-61, fig. 14. For fragments of terracotta pedestals at Corinth, see Mario lozzo, "Corinthian Basins on High Stands, " Hesperia 56. 4 (Oct. -Dec. 1987), pp. 355-416, cat. nos. 101, 108, & 114-118, pp. 401, 403, 407-408, pl. 78-79 & 81. For a discussion of louteria, see D. A. Amyx, "The Attic Stelai: Part III. Vases and Other Containers, " Hesperia 27. 3 (Jul. -Sep. 1958), pp. 163-254, at pp. 221-228. . Greek Canosan Pottery Winged Head Applique: Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosan Hellenistic Period, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A fascinating ceramic applique of a winged head, made to adorn a large vessel like an amphora. The head is that of either a youth or a woman with round earrings (the earrings may actually be decorative elements like the large applied circles above them), his or her face framed by curly hair parted at the center. Wide, staring eyes, a narrow nose, and a full-lipped, closed mouth complete the face, which is unlined. Wings project from its sides, each with delineated feathers. Two leaves and an elongated ovoid are at the top of the head. The back of the head is unpainted, but the back of the wings are painted, suggesting that while the head was attached, the wings reached outward. White paint covers the entire front of the sculpture, which was the Canosan style - white paint applied directly to buff pottery, with other colors then applied to the white. Size: 7. 25" W x 4. 5" H (18. 4 cm x 11. 4 cm); 5. 5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand. . An isolated head is one of the most characteristic motifs on South Italic vases - for example, in the Museum of Metropolitan Art's collection of vases from Lucania, Apulia, Campania, Paestum, and Sicily, almost half of all vases have an isolated head motif. Their earliest appearances were ca. 400 BCE, when South Italic artwork began to diverge from that of Athens, developing into the distinctive local styles that would flourish for the next two centuries. At first, isolated heads only decorated small vases, but around 340 BCE, they began to appear on larger vases as well - as this impressive example must have. The winged head is a particularly interesting motif, and one that was most popular in Apulia. These heads are usually of ambiguous gender, as this one is. Researchers believe they may be Nike, Eros, or Amazons - or, indeed, that they may have been made deliberately ambiguous to sell to a variety of clients with many different beliefs about the afterlife in the vibrant cultural melting pot of Hellenistic southern Italy. . . Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private European collection, acquired in the 1970s. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. . We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. . #147929 Condition One wing is repaired. This is well done and unobtrusive, with no added pigment. Otherwise the head is in beautiful condition with nice remaining pigment and light deposits on its surface.
