BEVERLEY FAMILY PAIR OF GEORGE II ENGLISH SILVER CANDLE...London, 1747, knopped and baluster stem with shaped sockets, stepped bases with corner shell decoration, matching heraldic device on bobeche and bases, marks for George Methuen, .925 fine, 36.73 oz. T., 7-3/4 in.
Provenance: Before the collector passed away, he noted that this and lot 1142 had been purchased directly out of the Beverley family. We do not have further documentation, but have no reason to doubt the veracity of the provenance; Important Private Virginia Estate
Note: The Beverley family was a very prominent early political Virginia family. Blandfield, the plantation house of William Beverley (1696-1756), was built circa 1716-1720, and is one of the largest colonial plantation mansions in Virginia. William had three children- Ursula, Robert and Anne- who married into the Fitzhugh, Carter, and Munford families. The silver offered here could have come through the family of one of his children, or through another branch of the Beverley family, but the details of the history of ownership are not known.

MEISSEN HöROLDT MANNER BRONZE MOUNTED COVERED BOWL Meissen German gilt bronze mounted porcelain covered bowl or cachepot, probably 18th century, painted in the manner of Johann Gregorius Höroldt (German, 1696-1775) with Chinoiserie decoration depicting figures in various scenes of leisure within cartouches of Bottger luster edged with gilt scrolls, the vessel with pierced bronze gallery and raised on tripod stand with hoof feet. 10.75" H x 8.25" diameter. Provenance: Removed from a 157 East 57th Street estate. Note: similar examples of Höroldt's work are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Frick Collection, New York, The Getty Museum, Los Angeles, The British Museum, London, and The V&A Museum, London.
