It has crossbolt rib extension with ejectors & gold plated dbl triggers. Mounted with highly figured, streaky, honey & chocolate, circassian walnut with carved & checkered, black insert, schnable tip forearm with straight stock having carved side panels with carved & checkered wrist with additional foliate carving down sides & around bottom of stock. It is 14-1/2” over a checkered butt with engraved heel & toe plates. Receiver is spectacularly engraved by “J. Davidson” & signed on trigger plate with date “2001”. It has a 2-color gold flying duck on both sides with gold cattails & a 2-color gold pheasant on bottom with gold grasses. Entire receiver has gold wire border. Vignettes have extremely well executed rose & scroll patterns with a large bouquet on trigger bow. Ornithological Illustrations, Hayes, Gould, et alia. Three etchings hand-colored and signed by William Hayes (1735-1802), the silver pheasant from Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds, dated Osterley Park, 1785, 17 3/4 x 12 3/4 in., contemporary mounting on a larger sheet of laid paper, with a hand-drawn ink and water color frame; the indigo bunting (called American Bluefinch) and male cardinal (called Virginian Grosbeak), both on full sheets, hand-colored, signed, and dated by Hayes, 1778, 20 3/4 x 14 1/4 in. each. Two Gould birds, the sparrow hawk, and Edward Lear's osprey, both hand-finished color lithographic prints, with the accompanying page of text, folio, vertical format, 20 1/4 x 14 1/4 in. each. [and] a folding quarto-format copper-plate engraving of a Chinese Pheasant removed from a volume of transactions of the Royal Society, c. 1765, with two leaves of text, the illustration 16 1/2 x 8 3/4 in.; all plates and pages disbound and unframed. George Hunt (British, 19th C.) after Francis Calcraft Turner (British, c. 1782-1846), Plate 3, "October: Pheasant Shooting", 1814, published by J.W. Laird, color aquatint depicting three gentlemen hunters shooting at pheasants roused out of brush by hounds, with intact late 19th C. paper label from "Arthur Ackermann & Son, Inc., establishment for the sale of sporting prints, drawings & paintings… New York" located verso, other 20th C. inscriptions verso, tiny isolated abrasions in sky, isolated light foxing, toning to mat, matted and framed behind glass, not examined out of frame, ss: 17 1/2" h. x 20 1/2" w.

CHINESE ARMORIAL "PELGROM" BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN CHARGER, Kangxi period, circa 1710. Painted at the center with a pheasant perched on rockwork, the cavetto and everted border with four lotus amongst foliage alternating with three floral cartouches interrupted at the top with the coat of arm of Pelgrom below a figure of a Chinese man within a crest.
The arms are those of Jacob Pelgrom, a Director of the Dutch East India Company who went to Batavia as a merchant in 1688, from where he went to Bengal in 1696; he was appointed Director-General of Bengal in 1701. He returned to Batavia to be head of the tax department in 1707 where he died in 1713.
A dish of the same size as the present lot is illustrated by C.J.A. Jörg and J. van Campen, Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, London, 1997, p.301, no. 352. Another dish, larger, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, illustrated by C. Le Corbeiller, China Trade Porcelain: Patterns of Exchange, New York, 1974, p.25, no.8. A yet larger dish from this service was in the Mottahedeh Collection, illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London, 1978, vol. I, p.82, no.39 and smaller dish in the Hodroff Collection is illustrated by D. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, London, 1994, p. 45, no.12.
