Robert Seabeck (B. 1945) "1970 Chevelle SS-454": Robert Seabeck (American, B. 1945) "1970 Chevelle SS-454" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media on Paper painting. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60c 1970 Chevelle SS 454 stamp issued September 1, 1998. . . In 1970, long hair, bell bottoms and fast muscle cars were all the rage, and for many, the 1970 Chevelle Super Sport 454 was the muscle car supreme. Its 454-cubic-inch V-8 beast-of-an-engine could churn out a fearsome 450 horsepower. In 1970, 53, 599 Super Sport Chevelle models were produced, but only 3, 733 had the 454-cubic-inch V-8 engine. Of these, most were standard 454 V-8s that offered 360 horsepower. Only the high-performance, solid-lifter, high-compression LS-6 models, available in limited quantities, produced the coveted 450 horses. "You can make our tough one even tougher, " promised Chevy. The ultimate Chevelle, the SS 454 LS-6 was one of the quickest muscle cars ever made -- a formidable adversary for anyone foolish enough to challenge it on a hot summer's night. . . Triumph’s 500 parallel twin of 1937 became so popular that other British makers had to copy the layout in order to survive. Indeed, so desirable did the American market find the design that the majority of these twins made were exported Stateside, a niche market which Honda soon registered. Their lightweight ohc twins were well-regarded but had not conquered the land of the big bike.
Honda’s big twin, the ‘450,’ was announced in 1964. Compared to most of the British machines, this was indeed a high-tech affair, using all of Honda’s racing expertise. The 180 degree, over-square, parallel twin used double overhead camshafts, the valves closed by steel torsion bars and with a bi-metal cylinder head, a steel ‘skull’ housing the valves while the massive alloy main casting dissipated the heat. The unit was bulletproof and an electric starter was standard, neither of which attributes featured on rivals’ machines.
In fact, the new engine proved to be both powerful and reliable, the only questions asked being why Honda had not made it the full ‘500,’ in those days an important capacity class, or given it a five-speed ‘box.
Following on from the initial road-equipped twin, the ‘Black Bomber,’ the 450 appeared in disguises more suited to the American market, one of them being to ‘Street Scrambler’ specification. Higher ‘bars, a spectacular upswept muffler system in full chrome, shorter seat, different colors and revised five-speed gearing were integral to the design and the result was a fast, dual-purpose bike, admittedly with a fairly modest off-road capability in standard trim, but arguably much more exciting.
This example has been extensively restored to a very high level in the original dark red livery and shows fewer than 2,300 miles. All of the Honda period livery is present and the chrome is beautiful making this a strong contender in the rapidly expanding collecting market for ‘60s Hondas.

Gean Smith, Texas, New York, Illinois, (1851 - 1928) Horses Escaping Wildfire, 1912, oil on canvas signed and dated lower right. Multiple patches of restoration visible on the verso. Heavy cracking scattered throughout. Biography from the Archives of askART: A painter and illustrator whose work is especially focused on horses, Gean Smith was born in New York state and moved to Chicago in 1871, where he established a studio until 1884. The next year, he moved to New York City and worked there until 1923, when he settled in Galveston, Texas. He earned a reputation for horse portraits, although he also did dog paintings and Civil War genre such as his 1884 painting, General Grant and His Staff at Fort Donelson. He was a book illustrator with work including Tales of the Turf and 'Rank Outsiders' by Richard Cary (1891). In one of his paintings, The Parade of Prize Winners, he depicted 65 individual horses, focusing on the personality of each one. For a menu at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, he painted a champion trotter image that became a collector's item. He said he was self-taught "except for one lesson" (Samuels 450) when he was age 16 and spent a dollar for a one-hour session in the use of crayons. Of his subjects, he said: "The real likeness of a horse in action is above the legs." (Samuels 450) In 1923, Smith retired to Galveston, Texas and died there at St. Mary's Infirmary in 1928. He is buried in that city in the Episcopal Cemetery. Exhibitions include the Annual Texas Artists Exhibition in Fort Worth, 1925 to 1928. His painting is represented in the Capitol Historical Artifact Collection in Austin.
