One of only 35, a Smith & Wesson First Model Schofield Single Action Revolver, .45 S&W caliber, scarce nickel plating, likely commercially sold without the "U.S." mark at butt (S&W manufactured 3035 of this model, 3000 were accepted by and sold for $13.50 each to the U.S. Army and stamped U.S at the butt), this revolver having the two digit serial number 25 found at the cylinder, left butt frame under grip and stamped on the inside of the right grip, a 7" round barrel with solid grooved rib, marked at the left lower ejector housing with two line Smith & Wesson address and last patent date of "July 25th 71", the right lower ejector housing marked "Schofield's Pat. Apr 22d 1873", curved blade front sight, fixed rear sight at barrel latch, the underside of the barrel at lug forward of hinge marked with letters 'L' and 'P', six round auto eject cylinder, walnut grips with some dents, excellent bright bore with strong rifling, finish estimate at 60%-70% with most finish loss at cylinder and left frame, good mechanical operation **Note 1: This revolver is accompanied by a letter from Smith & Wesson stating that it was shipped, with a blue finish, by the S&W factory to the U.S. National Armory, Springfield, Mass. on July 12, 1875. As it apparently did not pass inspection it was not stamped U.S., thus making it one of 35 that similarly failed the government inspection. Speculatively, as the S&W letter does not show that the gun was re-worked by the factory, it was likely eventually sold to firearm dealers Bannerman or Schuyler, Hartley and Graham, both of New York City, and subsequently received the nickel finish. It is possible that there may be more conclusive information in the records at the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. **Note 2, Blue Book of Gun Values: "Extreme rarity factor of this model precludes accurate pricing".

Delevan & Co. were known hardware merchants in New York beginning in the 1820s. Locks stamped with their name have turned up on other rifles including Joseph Medbury's who was a known gunsmith in Rochester, New York, circa the 1840s.

William III Period British Flintlock Musket .80 bore diameter 45.625" octagonal-to-round barrel with British proofs on the top flat of barrel. Very plain rounded?lockplate with royal cipher of King William III.? Brass buttplate which is secured to the stock by the use of six iron nails and retained by three sidelock screws.?Barrel is held to stock by three pins and a tang screw.? Buttstock is quite dark and could either be ash or locust. On the left side of stock the initials?"TH" and "D" are stamped in the stock near the buttplate.?Two sheet brass ferules.? Wood ramrod.? Circa 1690-1710.This piece was found many years ago in Narrows an early town located in Giles County Virginia. It is?near a narrow gouge formed by the cutting of the New River through the Allegheny Mountains hence the town name.? The musket appears to have seen little service but the lock is inoperative due to a broken sear which is still present in the lock.? Apparently the piece was set aside for repair and somehow overlooked and forgotten. The grey English flint retains its original leather flint cushion between the jaws of the cock.? The wood ramrod (though cracked and repaired) appears to be original to the musket. Supporting documentation and general research accompanies this piece which won "Single Weapon Best of Show" at the Maryland Arms Show in Timonium Maryland in 2006.This iron-mounted military musket pre-dates the earliest standardized Long Land Pattern service weapon known fondly as "Brown Bess" which made its appearance sometime during the late 1720's. The flintlock was not manufactured to a "Sealed Pattern" and was issued during a time when English colonels routinely purchased "privately made arms for their regiments" at the lowest possible cost to themselves thus insuring a profit.During the reign of William III (1689-1702) both the obsolete matchlock musket and newer flintlock musket served side-by side as the former transitioned from the scene along with pole arms and pikemen. Under the restored Protestant King William the consortium of London gun makers dominated the military trade making quantities of "completely fabricated muskets" under contract to the regimental colonel who in turn expected reimbursement usually at at premium from the Master-General of Ordnance. The myriad of stamped crowns and proof marks that signify later English weapons had yet to be established. The lock plate of this example bears the royal cypher of William III (a nearly identical lock is illustrated in Marlborough's Army 1702-1711 Osprey Series (p.35) together with stamped letters "TH" probably the initials of the regimental or company commander and the letter "D" indicating D Company.During the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1712) London made flintlocks were insufficient to supply the expanding army and many "inferior quality" arms were necessarily acquired in Holland and Belgium at grossly inflated prices. This ultimately led to the implementation of the Ordnance System around 1715 and the beginning of the standardized or sealed pattern Long Land Pattern Musket that would ultimately evolve into the "Brown Bess." The specifications of this flintlock closely match the bore (.75 cal.) and length (46 inches) of the succeeding Queen Ann musket. The musket retains it original wooden ramrod (steel ramrods first noted in 1724) and would have utilized the early plug bayonet as opposed to a socket bayonet. This is precisely the type of weapon that might have seen service at Blenheim against the French in 1704 under the brilliant leadership of the Duke of Marlborough. Condition: The barrel and lock?have a dark brown patina mixed with even pitting scattered throughout.? Metal has a dark look? that blends well with the patina on the stock and matches evenly.???Stock contains some small dents throughout its surface along with a small number (ca 15) of inactive worm holes only in the forestock area. Two stock indentations from rounded (domed) screw head impressions from another musket on the reverse side of the stock suggest possible storage at one time within a crate. The forestock has been cracked approximately 18 inches from the muzzle with some wood slivers missing and poorly glued but all original fabric. This region is extremely fragile. Minor chips in the stock at the muzzle and the rear entry pipe.?A virtually untouched in-the-black colonial musket fabricated under contract with British Ordnance during the reign of William III (1689-1702).
Double-Barrel Percussion Shotgun by Whitney Arms Presented to Frank Tiesing .12 gauge 32'' barrels S/N 1007. Engraved on the top of barrel Presented To Frank Tiesing By Whitney Arms Company. Engraved metal frame. Finely figured checkered walnut buttstock and checkered forearm. Complete with research file on Frank Tiesing.Frank W. Tiesing was one of those inventive geniuses who had a major impact on the development of firearms during one of the most important periods that just after the Civil War yet whose name has been forgotten by collectors and researchers until very recently. Tiesing was born in Germany about 1840. He was naturalized as an American citizen 7 March 1867. His wife Martha was also born in Germany about 1844 (or 1848) and arrived here in 1855 or 1865 (records are sketchy). Frank appears in the New Haven City Directory as a machinist at 35 Bishop St. from 1864 until 1883. He died 8 Nov. of that year but his sons Edward and Berthold continued working at the Bishop Street address. Frank Tiesing held dozens of patents for improvements in firearms. Most of his patents relate to longarms - lever action rifles magazine systems single shot systems and more. A few were used by Winchester but the majority of patents were used by Eli Whitney Whitney Arms Co. as this gun attests. This presentation gun was one of a group of three of Tiesing??Ts personal guns sold by his grandson in the 1960s. The guns were then sold by Jackson Arms Company of Dallas TX in 1968 (Catalog #25 lot 601). They were apparently purchased by a dealer and the group broken up subsequently. This gun was purchased by Norm Flayderman and sold to the current owner. Tiesing appears to have worked in an independent capacity although he held patents with other inventors such as Samuel Kennedy and Charles Gerner. The History of the City of New Haven (Atwater 1887: 154) shows Tiesing working for William Schoolhorn & Co. manufacture scissors shears and other cutlery as well as tools and hardware. The history indicates that he had a major role in that entity from 1880 until his death in 1883 and that his widow sold her interest in the company the following year. The history indicates that Mr. Schoolhorn came from New York to Whitneyville in 1858 where he was employed by the Whitney Arms Company until 1863; apparently Tiesing knew Schoolhorn from his association with Whitney Arms. We located at least one other patent held by Tiesing for a Coach Hinge (#239 201) presumably associated with the hardware handled by Schoolhorn. There are probably many more patents held by Tiesing which have been all but forgotten like their inventor. But a recent renewed interest in these giants in the history of firearms will certainly bring many more inventors and their inventions into the light of day. Condition: Barrels retain 95% of the rust blue finish a couple of brown spots on the right side of barrel. Frame retains 90% of the original blue finish. Buttstock and forearm are excellent retaining most of the original varnished finish.

EXTRAORDINARILY RARE AND IMPORTANT CONFEDERATE RAINS BARREL TORPEDO. One of two known examples in existence and the only one in private hands. This is a Rains barrel torpedo that was recovered during the Civil War in Mobile Bay, AL. and was developed by Gabriel James Rains, Chief of the Confederate Torpedo Service. Gabriel James Rains was born in Craven County, NC in 1803. Rains entered West Point and graduated 13th in the class of 1827. He was a Lt. in the 5th U.S. Inf. serving in FL. and LA. He fought in the Second Seminole War and recruited troops for the Mexican War. In early 1861 Rains had risen to the rank of Lt. Col. and after NC seceded he resigned his commission and entered the Confederate army as a Col. by September of 1861 Gabriel Rains was promoted to Brig. Gen. The authentic mushroom anchor was recovered from Charleston, SC. Accompanying are two reproduction Rains sensitive primer fuses that are exact copies made by Michael Kochan co-author of the book TORPEDOES Another Look at the Infernal Machines of the Civil War and this torpedo is pictured on page 42, bottom right, of this book. There are two iron fuse plates that held the Rains torpedo fuses. The Confederates made the torpedo from locally available materials with the main body consisting of a wooden barrel or keg. At each end is a solid pc of a pine log that was hand shaped into a cone and affixed to the ends of the bbl. At the end of each cone are loops that were used to secure the torpedo to the mushroom anchor. It was found that the bbl alone would roll in the current or tide and possibly dislodge from the anchor. Later the cones were added to streamline the bbl torpedo. Both the inside and outer surface of the bbl was coated with tar to make it watertight. After the bbl was watertight, it was filled with black powder with a small air pocket left for buoyancy. The first warship sank by a torpedo (we call them mines today) was the U.S.S. Cairo at 11:55 AM on December 12, 1862 in the Yazoo River, Mississippi. George Yost, a fifteen year old crew member of the U.S.S. Cairo, wrote "...just as we were training on the battery we were struck by a torpedo, which exploded under our starboard bow, a few feet from the center and some 35 or 40 feet from the bow proper just under our provision store room, which crushed in the bottom of the boat so that the water rushed in like the roar of Niagara. In five minutes, the hold was full of water and the forward part of the gunboat was flooded...One of our heaviest bow guns had been dismounted by the force of the explosion injuring three men…" "…Executive Officer Hiram K. Hazlett and the writer were the last two persons to leave the sinking vessel which we did by jumping into the "dingey" which was manned by two sailors, and awaited us at the stern...We moved off just in time to escape being swallowed up in the seething caldron of foaming water... Nothing of the CAIRO could be seen 12 minutes after the first explosion, expecting the smoke stacks, and the flag staff from which still floated the flag above the troubled waters…". In 1877 General Rains wrote in the Southern Historical Society Papers, Vol. III. Richmond, VA., Nos. 5 and 6, that "…Ironclads are said to master the world, but torpedoes master the ironclads, and must so continue on account of the almost total incompressibility of water and the developed gasses of the fired gunpowder of the torpedo under the vessel's bottom passing through it, as the direction of least resistance…." "…During the war with the Confederacy, there were 123 torpedoes planted in Charleston harbor and Stono River, which prevented the capture of that city and its conflagration. There were 101 torpedoes planted in Roanoke River, NC, by which, of twelve vessels sent with troops and means to capture Fort Branch, but five returned. One was sunk by the fire from the fort, and the rest by torpedoes. Of the five ironclads sent with other vessels to take Mobile, AL (one was tin clad), three were destroyed by torpedoes. There were fifty-eight vessels sunk by torpedoes in the war, and some of them of no small celebrity, as Admiral Farragut's flagship the Harvest Moon, the Thorn, the Commodore Jones, the Monitor Patapsco, Ram Osage, Monitor Milwaukee, Housatonic and others. (Cairo in Yazoo River). Peace societies we must acknowledge a failure in settling national differences by arbitration, since enlightened nations go to war for a mere political abstraction, and vast armies in Europe are kept ready for action, to be frustrated, however, by this torpedo system of mining, carried out according to views…". The destruction of Union ships during the Mobile Bay campaign was severe. On August 5, 1864 the U.S.S. Tecumseh led the 18-ship Union squadron into the Mobile Bay, which included the monitors U.S.S. Chickasaw, U.S.S. Manhattan, and U.S.S. Winnebago. Just after 7 A.M., Tecumseh opened fire on Fort Morgan. When the U.S.S. Tecumseh veered left to engage the Confederate ram C.S.S. Tennessee, the Union monitor hit a torpedo. A tremendous explosion occurred sinking the U.S.S. Tecumseh rapidly with its captain and 92 crewmen. Rear Admiral David Farragut is famous for shouting the order "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!" after the sinking of the U.S.S. Tecumseh. After the naval attack of August 5, 1864, at total of nine U.S. warships and a launch were sunk as a result of these infernal machines with around 200 seamen killed or wounded. These devices may seem to be crude but they played a prominent role in the Civil War damaging or destroying more U.S. Navy ships than all of the other Confederate weapons or ships combined. The photograph is a wartime image of the Charleston Arsenal in South Carolina (courtesy Library of Congress). Several Rains bbl torpedoes can be seen in the center of the photograph. The torpedo drawings are from the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. DIMENSIONS: Overall length 43-1/2", Diameter 44". Accompanying this lot is a photocopied letter from Jack Tripp to Cdr. Owens of the naval base in Charleston, SC in which Mr. Tripp confirms his desire to have the mine transferred to the Fleet Mine Warfare Training Center to be placed on display as part of the Charleston Harbor Exhibit at Patriots Point. Anchor chain display created by Historical Ordnance Works, Woodstock, GA. CONDITION: Fine condition with most of the tar remaining on the outer surface and most of the bands intact with a few loose but secure bands. Wood has some shrinkage. Winchester Model 1895 . 30-40 US Lever Action Rifle: For bidding in this lot is a Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action rifle, chambered for . 30 US, otherwise known as . 30-40 Krag. This particular example originates from manufacture year 1910. The Winchester Model 1895 is a lever-action repeating firearm developed and manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in the late 19th century, chambered for a number of full-size military and hunting cartridges such as 7. 62ÌÑ54mmR, . 303 British, . 30-03, . 30 Army, . 30-06, . 35 Winchester, . 38-72 Winchester, . 40-72 Winchester and . 405 Winchester. The Model 1895 was the first Winchester rifle to feature a box magazine located underneath the action instead of the tubular magazine design, which had remained fundamentally unchanged from the Winchester 1866. This allowed the rifle to safely chamber military and hunting cartridges with spitzer (pointed) bullets. The M1895 was also the last of the lever-action rifles to be designed by John Browning, and featured a rear locking bolt as in his previous designs dating back to the Winchester 1886. The M1895 is the strongest lever-action rifle Winchester has produced, designed to handle the increased pressures generated by the more powerful smokeless powder cartridges entering common use at the time of its introduction. This example utilizes a 27" round barrel, blue'd finish, contrasted by beautiful walnut fixtures. The firearm shows the correct roll-stamping, reading; ". 30 U. S. " on the top of the barrel, behind the rear sight, "Model 1895 - WINCHESTER - TRADE MARK" on the upper-tang, "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. - NEW HAVEN, CONN. U. S. A. PAT. AUG. 23. 98. - AUG. 6. 07" on the left side of the receiver, and "NICKEL STEEL BARREL - ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" on the upper left of the barrel.
