Monumental Painted Linen Panel, "Thoughts of Love", featuring a pensive classical maiden seated in a farm yard surrounded by doves, fourth quarter 19th century, presented in a fruitwood-stained beechwood frame, h. 63-1/2", w. 98". Ex-collection the Estate of Josephine Baker, Castelnaud-Fayrac, France. Josephine Baker became famous in the 1920's for her on stage comic routines, singing and exotic beauty. She took on nicknames which included Black Venus, Black Pearl, and Creole Goddess. Her career spanned fifty years until her death in 1975. During her hayday she rivaled the likes of Gloria Swanson and Mary Pickford as the most photographed woman in the world and earned more than any entertainer in Europe. Due to the racial tension in America she spent most of her time in Paris and refused to perform in front of segregated audiences. The NAACP named May 20th Josephine Baker Day in honor of her efforts. During World War II, she served France by both performing for the troops and as an honorable correspondent for the French Resistance by smuggling secret messages written on her sheet music. After the war, she adopted 12 children from around the world. At her Funeral the French government honored her with a 21 gun salute making her the first American woman buried in France with Military honors.

Condition: occasional wear and rubbing of borders, slight stains and general signs of use, some water damage towards end of manuscript; small splits to joints. Provenance: (1) Written and illuminated for use in Rouen. The Calendar includes Rouen feasts, including Hugh, Romanus, Evodius, Mellonius etc., and the translation of the relics of St.Anne and translations of Audoenus, Laurence, Ursinus, Romanus and Evodius as well as the dedication of Rouen cathedral (October 1). The lengthy Litany includes Mellonius, Evodius, Romanus, Audonus etc., as well as Ermelinda, a Belgian recluse from Maldart, Opportuna of Montreuil and Angadresima, abbess of Oroër-des-Vierges, who recieved the veil from Audoenus; (2) M. Lowdon-Rolly (according to a loosely inserted printed label, the manuscript was owned by Lowdon-Rolly whenit was exhibited in the 1952 exhibition 'L'Art du Moyen Age', in the Musée Cantini in Marseilles).Contents:The manuscript opens with a Calendar including Rouen saints (fol.1r); the Hours of Virgin [Use of Rouen], with Matins (fol.7r), Lauds (fol.18v), Prime (fol.23r), Terce (fol.30r), Sext (fol.32v), None (32v), Vespers (fol.36v) and Compline (fol.39r); Hours of the Holy Ghost (fol.41v); Suffrages to the Holy Trinity and Saints (fol.44r); the Penitential Psalms (fol.49r) and Litany; the Office of the Dead (fol.63r) and the Commendation of Souls (fol.78v); additional Offices for different feasts throughout the year (fol.92r); additional Psalms and prayers to the Virgin (fol.228r).Illumination:The illumination is the work of two artists of different generations. The majority of the miniatures are painted by a follower of the MASTER OF THE ÉCHEVINAGE DE ROUEN (or the Master of the Geneva Latini), who dominated Rouennais illumination during the third quarter of the fifteenth century. Books of Hours in this style were illuminated in Rouen in huge numbers in the later fifteenth century, supplying the needs not only of that city but also of all Normandy and elsewhere. The Échevinage Master ran a large workshop with many collaborators, producing very standardised Books of Hours designed to be sold on the open market (cf. F. Avril and N. Reynaud, Les manuscrits à peintures en France 1440-1520, 1993, pp.169-72; J. Plummer, The Last Flowering, French Painting in Manuscripts 1420-1530, 1982, pp.66-7, nos.87 and 88). The style of the miniatures in this manuscript is very close to that in a manuscript from the group, now Edinburgh, University Library MS.43. A second artist painted the miniatures of the Crucifixion (fol.39r), Pentecost (fol.41v) and the initial of the Trinity (fol.44r) in the distinctive style of the MASTER OF THE ANGO HOURS. Quires 5, 6 and 7 are early sixteenth-century replacements for the original leaves, which presumably were damaged in some way, but written and decorated to concord with the rest of the manuscript. The Ango Master represents the last great moment of Rouen manuscript illumination. Named after one of his characteristic works (Paris, BnF ms.N.a.lat.392), a Book of Hours for Use of Rouen which includes a poem on the christening of Maria Ango in the church of St. Patrice de Rouen in 1514. Other Books of Hours by the same painter include Rouen, Bibl.Mun.ms.35 (Use of Rouen), Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum MS.116 (Use of Rome), New York, PML MS.M.61 (Use of Orléans) and a Book of Hours sold at Sotheby's London, 5 December 1995, lot 48. His style is steeped in classical and Italian influences and shows the trend into baroque and mannerism. Most manuscripts by the Ango Master appear to have been made in the 1520s and it was presumably at that date that these two quires were added to the present manuscript to replace damaged ones. The complexity of text and extensive border decoration are typical of Rouen Hours of the last decade of the century and were designed to allow manuscripts to compete with the new printed Books of Hours. The subjects of the miniatures are:1. Folio 7r, the Annunciation, 95mm. by 65mm., in an arched compartment, the Virgin and Gabriel kneeling in an interior; full border. 2. Folio 25r, the Nativity, 90mm. by 65mm., the Virgin, Joseph and two angels kneeling in adoration of the Child, in front of a ruined stable, to the right the ox and ass; full border.3. Folio 28v, the Annunciation to the Shepherds, 95mm. by 65mm., three shepherds with their flock in a landscape, one playing bagpipes, and one, a woman, playing with a sheep, an angel in the sky above; full border. 4. Folio 30v, the Adoration of the Magi, 95mm. by 65mm., the Virgin and Child seated before the stable, the kings presenting gifts, in a landscape; full border. 5. Folio 32v, the Presentation in the Temple, 95mm. by 65mm., the Holy Family with Simeon and an attendant with a basket of doves, in an interior seen through an architectural frame; full border. 6. Folio 34v, the Flight into Egypt, 95mm. by 65mm., the Virgin and Child riding a donkey led by St. Joseph, in the background the miracle of the wheat, set in a landscape; full border.7. Folio 36v, the Coronation of the Virgin, 95mm. by 65mm., the Virgin kneeling before God the Father seated on a throne, an angel swooping down to place a crown on her head, set in an interior; full border.8.
