12th C. Seljuk Bronze Oil Lamp + Stand w/ Lions: Near East, probaby made in Khorassan, northeast Persia (Iran), Seljuq (Saljuq/Seljuk) period, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A fantastically preserved bronze oil lamp with a stand and base, composed of four parts that easily fit together to create a fabulous whole. You can easily imagine this piece gracing a sumptuous medieval Persian home - perhaps that of a prosperous merchant or high ranking advisor to the sultan. The first component is the lamp itself, with a flaring foot, rounded body, long spout with leaf-shaped mouth, lid in the form of an openwork lion's bust, and handle with a bird with a flaring tail perched atop it. Stylized interlocking Arabic script flows around the shoulder and the foot. Size: 11. 75" W x 28" H (29. 8 cm x 71. 1 cm). . The second component is a bowl that the lamp sits inside of, with a wide, concave base and a low crenellated barrier around its edge, presumably for catching any oil that might drip from the lamp. The third component is the leg of the stand, an openwork hexagonal column with round openwork spheres at top and bottom so that it resembles a minaret. Floral motifs and stylized Arabic cover its surface in relief. This sits atop the fourth component, the foot of the lamp, which has three feet, each in the form of the front half of a lion. The openwork body of the foot also has scroll and floral motifs around it and on the necks of the lions, who stand at attention in a way reminiscent of the lions at the famous fountain in the Court of the Lions at the Alhambra - made by the Seljuq's Islamic world contemporary, the Nasrid Dynasty. . From the earliest known art of this region, lions - portrayed as lionesses, without manes - symbolized both power and hunting, the pursuit of elites. During the Seljuq period, there was a huge market in bronze secular items, part of a luxury trade in the marketplaces of the Levant. They were made to appeal to consumer taste, including Christians, Muslims, and people with little interest in religious art. As a result, scenes of court life, battle, and hunting - as this piece is probably a reference to - were popular. . A very similar but less ornate lamp and lampstand sold for GBP 22, 500 (approximately USD 40, 000) in 2011 in London: https://www. christies. com/lotfinder/Lot/a-large-khorassan-bronze-lampstand-north-east-5482966-details. aspx . . Provenance: private California, USA collection, by descent, moved from Germany in 1997, originally collected in the 1970s in Hamburg, Germany. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. . We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. . #148839 Condition This is in four parts that easily separate. Rich patina on all four components. Lamp has a few small indentations. Lid is still functional. Small tear near one leg on the base. Light deposits on all surfaces.
Published Massive Roman Bronze Three-Nozzle Oil Lamp: Roman, later Imperial period, ca. 1st century CE. A large, beautiful bronze oil lamp cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process and designed so that it could hang from the original chains attached to three suspension hooks, one above each of the three nozzles - or sit on its concave base. The scallop shell or spade-shaped nozzles are equidistantly placed around a central raised boss with three trios of perforations (to release air as the lamp burned) surrounding a central fill hole. Three chains rise from the loops fitted to the hooks and meet at a central suspension loop. On top, around the lamp's outer perimeter, is a raised decorative edge. A lamp like this, made of of bronze and with multiple nozzles which burned more fuel was more costly and likely served as a status symbol of a wealthy family. Size: 13" W x 17. 25" H (33 cm x 43. 8 cm). . Some scholars have noted that bronze lamps, with their increased cost over pottery lamps, were most likely a type of heirloom, and were reserved for the richest households. Scholars believe that such bronze lamps remained in a family for at least three generations as they were coveted costly luxuries. Although metal lamps had a longer lifespan than lamps made of other materials, they were often melted down and reworked into other pieces. So having a complete example like this is rare. . Published in Fortuna Fine Arts: Venerable Traditions, New York, 2007, #150. p. 94. Cf. Pompeii, inv. 3278, published in De Spagnolis, no. 12, pp. 26 and 38. . . Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. . We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. . #139375 Condition Small loss to rim and rectangular cut-out from bottom of one nozzle. In general, nicks to peripheries. Chains still there and serve well, so that the oil lamp may be suspended. Remarkable for its size and exceptional degree of preservation.

Roman / Byzantine Bronze Hanging Oil Lamp w/ Chain: **Originally Listed At $600**. . Late Roman / early Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A cast bronze oil lamp with a trio of spouts projecting from its sides and a wide, round opening with a raised mouth at the center. The lamp stands atop a flaring, conical foot. a loop handle topped by a deep crescent form, which probably once had a cross form inset into it (see condition report). The bowl stands on a round, slightly raised foot, and likely once had a lid based on similar known examples. Three delicate bronze chains are attached to it, one above each spout. Each of these is made of links studded with three broad discs with incised concentric circle motifs on their interiors. At the top of the chain is a large cross of the Byzantine style, wider at its edges, with a hook at the top. Size: 4. 95" W x 18. 4" H (12. 6 cm x 46. 7 cm) . . Late Roman / Byzantine Bronze Oil Lamp on Stand: **Originally Listed At $3500**. . Late Roman / early Byzantine period, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A cast bronze lamp attached to a cast bronze tripod stand composed of two pieces. The lamp itself has a beautiful handle composed of two tendril-like extensions of bronze that curl upward and join together at a fleur-de-lis style motif over the body of the vessel. The hinged lid has a mask-like youthful face on it, probably referencing the theatre. The tripod stand has a rounded disc below the lamp, presumably for catching oil. It stands on a rounded base with three short, paw-like legs projecting from its sides. Size: 5. 75" W x 11. 2" H (14. 6 cm x 28. 4 cm). . Some scholars have noted that bronze lamps, with their increased cost over pottery lamps, were a kind of heirloom, and were most likely reserved for the richest households. Bronze lamps, which have been theorized to remain in a family for at least three generations because of their expense before being recast could also have additions added to them - like crosses or new lids - to suit changing styles. This particular type of lamp proved popular and several production centers for the style arose; ultimately they were distributed widely throughout the Eastern Roman Empire, reaching Asia Minor, Morocco, and even Central Europe. . .
