A Rare George III Silver Green Turtle Soup Ladle of Caribbean Interest, c. 1800, intaglio mark J R or I R in a rectangle, possibly John Robin, the ladle in the form of a green turtle (Chelonia Mydas), the bamboo form handle with palmette collar and pineapple finial, the interior of the turtle's shell with presentation engraving: "With every Sentiment of Respect from Francis de Ridder, To the Hon F P van Berckel 1807, Friends form'd in 'Union' of heart and aims, Prove firm supporters of each others claims, Victorious Virtue warms Thy gen'rous breast, Be thine 'enjoyment', and perennial 'Rest,' length 14 1/4 in., weight approx. 9.5 troy ozs. $6000/9000 Note: Franco Petrus Van Berckel was the Netherlands' minister to the United States during George Washington's first term and was later appointed fiscal of Demerara (today part of Guyana). The fiscal's legal function was to enforce Dutch laws in the colony; as payment he received 1/3 of all fines. (James Rodway, History of British Guiana, Volume II pp. 192 & 200) The depiction of a Caribbean sea turtle in a silver form is exceedingly rare. Toddy ladle: stamped 'WJ' and 'ABD', the oval bowl is of fair gauge, overall fine surface scratches, the terminal has probably been erased and re-engraved with the initial F. No splits or dame or repair. Pair of tea spoons marks are in good condition, there is some wear to the edge of the maker's mark on one spoon, the bowls are in poor condition, slightly mis-shapen and think and sharp. Sugar tongs: marks are alright, slight wear to the edges, the sugar tongs are slightly bent. there is a heavily repaired and soldered crack to one arm, they have been erased at some point, and there is wear to the bright cutting.

Two Baltimore Coin Silver Ladles, mid 19th c., the first a fiddle & thread bearing the touchmark "G. D. Clark" (Gabriel D. Clark, active 1830-1896) along with other touchmarks (appears to read "J. Brunner" and one illegible), script monogram engraved to handle "Joanna R. Ness" (5.80 troy ozs., 13.75"); the second a fine fiddle form with large bowl bearing the touchmark "P. B. Sadtler & Sons" (Philip Benjamin Sadtler, active 1800-1860), this ladle likely dates to ca. 1830-1860, monogram to terminus of handle (6.05 troy ozs., 13.5").Some light, expected surface abrasions.
