A Whimsical Lapidary Confection—A Multi-gemstone Carving of an Ice Cream Sundae
By Manfred Wild
Idar-Oberstein, Germany
As delectable as it is a virtuoso work of lapidary art, this ice cream sundae shows both the sense of humor of the artist as well as his goldsmithing and lapidary talents. The glass is carved from optically clear rock crystal quartz, while polished and faceted rondels of citrine form the stem elegantly highlighted with bands of 18K yellow gold. The scoops of ice cream are formed from carved spheres of thulite, beige jasper, aventurine quartz, cappuccino jasper, white quartz and yellow calcite. Topping the sundae is a "wafer" carved of Kalahari jasper, a "cherry" of carnelian and melting "whipped cream" of white dolomite. An 18K yellow gold umbrella with green, blue and lavendar translucent enamel on a guilloché ground decorates this lapidary sculpture—a work of art good enough to eat!

Nano Lopez Bronze "Davian" Dragon Sculpture: Nano Lopez (Colombian, b. 1955). "Davian" bronze, edition number 23/48 AP, 2012. Nano Lopez's "Davian" presents a magical dragon perched atop a treasure chest and licking a luscious ice cream cone. According to Lopez, Davian "is a young dragon seen here enjoying a well deserved 'Dragon berry' ice cream cone (his very favorite), after a long and exhausting class about fire extinguishing techniques. " Lopez's technique combines traditional and innovative methods. The piece was created via the traditional lost wax process that originated in ancient Greece and Rome. Once the bronze was cast, Lopez added countless details via metal chasing, applied patinas to imbue the work with vibrant colors, and finally applied several coats of UV protective lacquer to both enhance and preserve the patina. According to Nano Lopez, "The transformation from clay to bronze has always been magical to me. " (artist's website) One of Lopez' sold out designs, replete with impressive artistry and technique.
